  • 1.  Installing OS X from recovery partition fails

    Posted Oct 10, 2016 06:39 PM

I have been trying to install OS X from the recovery partition over the past several days with no success.  The installation hangs at the "five minutes remaining" screen for hours without further progress.  Then, it sometimes alerts me that MacOS Sierra failed to download and that I should check the download screen again, which doesn't really make sense.  Shutting down the virtual machine and rebooting it results in a hang at the black screen with a white apple and an empty progress bar.

I am running macOS Sierra 10.12 and VMware Fusion Professional Version 8.5.0 (4352717).

    Hi Bachseans,

    Welcome to Fusion Community.

Recovery Partition is really slow even in host machine especially in Sierra 10.12.

I have tried 5 times and only 1 time download successfully.

If you still doesn't work, please let me know.

Could you give me the log from menu? it will display the download information

    Best Regards

I have actually been monitoring the log.  It has been running for over 2 hours and has only apparently downloaded 0.664519%.  I have the option to save the log but don't know how I can then send it to you since I can apparently only save it to areas accessible from within the virtual machine.  Let me know if you have a workaround for this and I will gladly do it and send the log on to you.

    it's really a tricky issue.

Which version MacOS Sierra are you using? Try to upgrade to latest version.

I will try to reproduce the issue in my environment.

For the log, Could you please try to screenshot to me?

    Thanks and Regards

To extract installer logs, I usually just attach a spare USB flash drive to the virtual machine and save the logfile to that.  Disconnect it from the VM, attach it to the host, and you can copy the logfile off from there.  I don't recall whether I needed to manually mount/unmount the drive in the guest along the way...

    Cheers,
