  • 1.  No Sound From Within Virtual VMDesktop - Yes Sound From Host

    Posted Aug 30, 2011 12:09 PM

    Using VMWare Desktop 7.1.4

    Host: Win 7 64 bit

    Virtual: Win 7 32 bit

Sound was working, but not anymore. One virtual did give me the blue screen of death, that is the only event I can see plus I keep windows updated.

I have not been reliable at taking snapshots.

Fresh, new virtual on another host machine also does not play sound, makes me suspect a windows update. All PC and Laptop are HP.

I have confirmed in Device Manager that the Sound, video and game controllers have up to date drivers. I checked from inside Device Manger and not from the web.

Using Camtasia 7.1. recording software and used to be able to playback audio from within virtual.

Host and Virtual updated with latest windows updates.

    Host machine speakers works fine.

Confirmed that sound card is detected upon login (VMWare setting)

Confrimed that sound would use speakers and not headset or some other device.

Confirmed that sound is not muted in virtual.

Went to control panel in virtual, Sounds, picked the speakers and selected Advanced to test, and virtual does not play test sounds.

Performed the same action on the host machine and the test DOES play sound.

    What am I missing?

    Thank you.

So you have more than one host where guests play no sound? But all these guest have the latest MS patch level installed?

Is the virtual sound device configured to be connetec when the virtual machine starts? If that is the case, can you install a new fresh guest without any patches and check that one?

Here is update, I can rule out MS Updates.

Basically, the no sound from the virtual is an issue only with the HP Laptop. This is what I did today:

    Created a new virtual with new Win 7 x86 Ultimate N Op Sys.with SP1

In the new virtual I turned off auto updates.

Confirmed Sound Card is connected and set to connect at logon in VM settings.

In the new virtual on HP Laptop, Control Panel, Sound, Properties, Advanced, Test Sound NO SOUND from inside the Virtual

In the host of the HP Laptop, same test DOES play sound.

So next: I did a full clone of the new Virtual to my removable TB drive.

Put the TB drive in the HP Desktop machine, opened virtual created on HP Laptop and sound DOES play inside the virtual when run on the Desktop.

Am I simply stuck having to change my configuration and working from the desktop? Urgh, screen issues etc.

    Thanks!.

I should also mention that I did a VM Tools repair and a total Control Panel Uninstall and Reinstall of VMWare Desktop 7.1.

Not sure what I am missing here.

But it sure puts a crinkle in my processes that I have come to love when doing Camtasia recordings in the confines of a virtual computer.

And in just two months I am teaching a bunch of technology educated accountants the virtue of working with virtuals - URGH!

    Update: Solved.

Downloaded an updated sound driver from HP Website and installed on Host.

Made sure host could play "Asteric" sound in the "Sounds" tab of Sound on Control Panel

Made sure Virtual did not have Mute on System Sounds.

Thanks to my friend and VMWare consultant, Hales Technologies, Sunrise, FL. Great job!
