  • 1.  Windows 98 not working on VMWare Workstation 17, Windows 11

    Hey guys

    Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I transferred my Windows 98 SE VM to my new Win 11 PC from a Windows 10 PC also running VMWare workstation 17. Does anyone know what is causing this issue or how to fix it?  I also transferred my Windows XP VM, and it didn't give me this error. 

    (I did try installing a new one, and I got an Illegal operation error)

    Is the new PC with Windows 11 using an AMD CPU?

    There is(are) longstanding bug(s) in AMD CPUs in their virtual 8086 mode extensions (VME) implementation. Unlikely that AMD will bother fixing this as VME is for 16-bit operations. That is also why the XP VM is fine as it is using 32-bit operation.

    My host is running a 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13700F

    Windows 9x is known to have issues with newer CPUs. You don't say what CPU was running in that old Windows 10 system, but I wonder since the problem occurs on the new PC with a more modern Intel CPU that you might be running into these problems. 

    If you haven't done so, you may wish to take a look at  https://github.com/JHRobotics/patcher9x if you haven't used this utility when you installed Windows 98 in your VM.

    Did you accept the offer to upgrade the virtual machine's virtual hardware when you moved it? If so, switch it back to the virtual hardware version that was present in on the old PC.

    I clicked "upgrade VMware tools"

    but i also tried it without upgrading and got the same issue

    sorry I never responded earlier I've been very busy with work anyway yes I did click upgrade VMware tools when it asked me to. I tried using the Patcher but when I ran it it gave me some error I'm not very good at GitHub so I just installed the exe that was on the list

     I installed it, and it says enter path to WINDOWS/SYSTEM. Is it talking about my host or the guest system path?
