After trying in vain increasing my storage space on my old laptop, I am now gotten a new laptop but I have problem installing Ubuntu on VMWare.

Here's the tutorial I tried to follow :

    https://www.makeuseof.com/install-ubuntu-on-vmware-workstation/

but, i am having problem here deciding what to do, as I am afraid if i press continue, my Windows OS will be erased.

Hope someone can advise me if there is a proper tutorial for me to follow.

    Tks

Just an update, I pressed continue and then Ubuntu installed by itself.  The problem is that there is a message that shows SMController not enabled but I can't find it in my T14 lenovo laptop in the bios page.  However, in the System property page it has all the latest drivers...

Your screenshot still has the Windows taskbar, the Ubuntu VM screen is still within the bounds of the VMware Player window; you're fine to proceed.

You don't need to fret about mistakes or fear about making mistakes. You are not doing jumping out of a plane or jumping off a cliff down a body of water; there are much more dangerous things in life than installing Ubuntu as a VM. Maybe for kicks you should install Ubuntu on your old laptop and wipe out everything (after you copy all your files).

ok. what about the SMController not enabled that showed to me by VMWare ? Or do I have to ask in the laptop company about this part ?

I guess you are talking about the a message that looked like 'piix4_smbus uninitialized' or "SMBus controller" or something similar when the Ubuntu VM was booting up. That is harmless as the "virtual hardware" does not have that device. You don't have to ask the laptop manufacturer in this instance. Anyway, in most cases, the laptop company won't deal with software you installed.

Ubuntu is probably one of the easiest and most friendly installation among the different Linux distros. If you want to dual-boot with your old Windows laptop it will detect the existing Windows partition and let you choose the size to allocate for Ubuntu and Windows and create the GRUB menu for choosing to boot Ubuntu or Windows.

      its an OS/laptop company issue not VMware's . . . worth a read:

SMBus Controller not recognized in Device Manager (Windows) (Lenovo)

You can use the Windows WSL feature for Ubuntu without any additional software. It works perfectly with Windows 11 and super easy to install as below:

Long ago, I have tried that.  It is a PAIN in the neck.  Were you able to bring in the apps that you have done using Windows to the Ubuntu using WSL ? I think using virtual machine is the best, as you can still use Windows and Linux at the same time.

I agree with you; it was a pain long ago, and I also gave up until a few weeks ago.

Give it a try now; you can remove using GUI if that doesn't fulfil your requirements
