  • 1.  DOS Window under VMWare

I have a client who's wanting to run a DOS application under VMWare.  However, the MSDOS window is smaller under VMWare than their monitor.  What can be done to increase the size of the MSDOS window?  I've attempted the Properties portion of the window but, in the end, that's not sufficient.

The cost to develop the application under a Windows-based environment is prohibitive at this time.

    Thanks

You might be stuck with that screen size - I am assuming you are not able to run it under a DOS window on a Windows machine -

If, as mentioned by weinstein5,  you can't run it from a Command Prompt in Windows where VMware Workstation might be able to scale it then the other option it to set the Host's resolution to the same size thus it might scale it although at the lower resolution.  The latter is not necessarily the best option but one to check out to see if it's tolerable.

You can change the behavior of a DOS APP if you change the setting in VMware Workstation general preferences. By default Full Screen is set to autofit. However, there's no vmware tools for DOS 6.22 so the max resolution seems 700x400 and in full screen the native windows/linux resolution of the host will be used and centered you see the DOS window with the 700x400 resolution. If you change to Stretch guest you should have the wanted full screen.

Do have other resolutions you need to work with ANSI or a Vesa aware application. There was an UniVesa driver for DOS available long time ago but it was only needed for applications which could display at other resolutions.

Works with the free WMware on my computer.

If your VMware window is set for the correct monitor size and you have a large unfilled screen with small DOS text in the center.  Exit out of DOS. restart VM Virtualbox Manager. Select your setup DOS version. in the setup text you will see Display and Double Click on it. Find where it says Scale Factor, " For DOS 6.22 and my Monitor I changed it to 200% with my graphics controller already set  to VMSVGA." You may not need to change the graphics controller.

This should work for you !

Are you sure you have the right virtualization software? There is no "VM Virtualbox Manager" for VMware Workstation.

Not to mention that the reply is to a 10 year old thread.
