I recently upgraded to Version 4 from 3. Yesterday I installed version 4.0.2 when the auto software update announced a new version was available. Now every time I start up I get this message:

Vmware Fusion has encountered an error and has shut down Windows

I get a choice of "Click to Restart Windows" or "Ignore" but regardless, the problem persists.

I manually downloaded a new copy of version 4.0.2 and installed it but the same problem occurs.

Would appreciate any suggestions on how I can resolve this...

I had the same problem. Using 4.0.1 did solve this problem for me. As I learned, the older versions are also available at the download page. There is a box where you can select the old versions.

Can you please try to go to the VM Settings and disable the 3D acceleration in the Display pane?

    Kind regards,

    Xavier

By the way, VMware folks, I'm experiencing a similar problem.

    vmWare version: 4.0.2

host OS: MacOS X "Lion" 10.7.2

    guest OS: Windows 7 x64

Prior to the upgrade to Lion, eveything was working.

I can provide the TGZ to the vmware support folks if they want.

Thank you so much. Luckily I did not need to use Windows urgently! Turning off 3D acceleration did the trick for me!

You didn't, by chance, ignore the warning about GFXStatus, or use some similar application that let's you override the autoswitching of the graphics chips, did you?

turning off the graphics accelerator has helped, so far no further crashes! Not usre, what GFX warnings you refer to,  I did not see any warnings, so I could not have ignored them....also, I have no other graphic app runing on this MAC.

One sidenote: I had on the original problem (dock eats memory and CPU) one more occurence, until I rebooted all machines at the same time after adding the line suggested by Steve Goddard. I never experienced the memory problem, but as mentioned earlier, I have 16GB RAM.
