I was just wondering if the currently-imposed 8GB guest OS memory limit is some hard limit, or is it likely to be increased in future releases?

We run fusion on an Xserve machine which has 16GB of physical RAM, and it would be great if the guest Linux VM could be assigned more than 8GB, as we run some pretty large jobs on it.

    Thanks in advance.

    Trevor.

You're not likely to hear from any employee on this one, as they cannot comment on possible future products. I'll tell you that you're lucky you have that limit on this version - all prior hosted products had a limit of 3.6 GB per guest (and 4 GB total of all running guests). The current Workstation 6 / Player 2 betas and the Fusion beta lifts this limit to 8 GB (and unlimited total).

Not that I'm not happy that you can do such powerful things with Fusion :smileywink:, but the official line is gonna be that Fusion is designed for individual desktop use and not running heavy-lifting servers.

Sounds like you want to see ESX Server running on your XServe?

shoot, even ESX 2.5 had a 3.6 GB guest limit. I don't think you're going to have any luck here.

Errrr... ESX 3.0 has been shipping for almost a year now and supports up to 64 GB of RAM per VM. And has a lot of other features you'd probably want for server workloads.

Sorry for the pedantry (and the off-topic-ness!), but ESX 3.0.x's per-VM memory limit is actually 16 GB. The per-server memory limit is 64 GB.
