  • 1.  Problems with Bridged Mode

    Posted Jun 01, 2011 04:13 PM

I'm running VMFusion build 390507 on osx 10.6.7. I have a vm running debian with the network mode set to bridged. Right now I've specified the physical device as AirPort, but I've also tried using auto detect.

If I configure the debian machine to use dhcp to obtain an ip address, it is unable to set anything up. If I instead manually input my ip settings, the machine is able to establish a network connection, meaning it is able to resolve addresses both within and outside of my network.

The mac where this vm is installed is able to connect to the vm using the vm's ip, either through ssh, ping, sftp, etc.

The problem is that no other machine on my network is able to see the vm. If I ping the vm's ip from a machine other than my mac, it is unable to resolve the address. In addition, my router isn't able to see the device on its internal network. I am however able to get a response if I ping my router from inside my vm.

I'm sure there are some details that I've failed to mention, so if you need any additional information, please let me know and I'll be sure to edit accordingly.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Have you tried removing and adding a new virtual nic? basically the bridged mode is a virtual wire between the virtual nic and the network port (ethernet or airport).

Think that if your MAC can ping or access ssh the virtual machine and the rest of the computers on the network can't it maybe related to a configuration issue.

    Regards/Saludos

I am having the same problem. Running 10.6.7, VMW Fusion 3.1.3. Bridged Mode, ethernet or airport, or auto detect. I have deleted the network adapter, re-set it twice now. We have many users on VMW Fusion, specifcally 3.1.2; I am about to advise not to update to the new version since this is an issue.

Any advice would be most useful.

Dammit! I have the same problem. CentOS reports no link during booting and my VM has no connectivity.

This really sucks because I'm in active development and my VM is a critical resource.

Here's hoping I can successfully downgrade to 3.1.2 again. :-(

VMware Fusion 3.1.3. just upgraded this morning from 3.1.2. VM running CentOS 5.5. Mac OS X 10.6.7.

    eth0 bridged, manual Ethernet detect.

Whew! A straight reinstall of 3.1.2 works great and networking is restored.

It's a good thing I keep older installers.  I notice that the Download Center doesn't offer any older images (than 3.1.3), so in future I won't be using the "upgrade in place" option, I'll download the installer .dmg and manually upgrade it myself.

I had a similar problem after upgrade to 3.1.3 on OS X 10.6.7 in bridged mode for a windows XP SP3.

Initially I could not get any network connection after upgrade but a removal and reinstall of the network allowed me to get an address via DHCP but at the end of yesterday, on DHCP update, it failed to get a good address.

Further investigation showed that the upgrade or more likely the network re-install had changed the MAC address and as this MAC was registered and now being different from the registered address it failed.

Once I reset the MAC address and restarted vmware all came right.

The instruction 'click advanced options' had me flumoxed for a bit, I kept clicking and nothing happened, until I figured out clicking the very tiny triangle next to it.

This is still a problem (losing DHCP lease and being unable to renew, despite DHCPDISCOVER packets being sent and the router claiming it's responding, but the VM never sees them) on VMware Fusion 4.1.1, and in my case has nothing to do with the MAC address changing.
