Vmware fusion in a 4GB Mac makes it crash intermitently

  • 1.  Vmware fusion in a 4GB Mac makes it crash intermitently

    Posted Nov 26, 2007 02:04 AM

I use Vmware Fusion 1.1 Build 62573, in a Mac runing leopard and 4GB of memory.

Sometimes, while running a virtual machine, the MacOSX crashs and a reboot is needed.

    Any suggestions ?

    Otavio

When you say OS X crashes, do you mean a kernel panic? If so, as requested in , please include /Library/Logs/panic.log and describe what you're doing when OS X crashes.

    Hi.

When I say MacOSX crashs, is because I receive the black screen with the message "You need to restart your system".

Looking at the /var/log/system.log, allways before the reboot, we have the following messages:

    Nov 26 16:32:40 otavio-iglesias-azeredos-acpi kernel[0]: vmnet: VMNetDisconnect called for port 0x860e080

    Nov 26 16:32:40 otavio-iglesias-azeredos-acpi kernel[0]: vmnet: VNetUserIfFree: freeing userIf at 0x860e080.

    Nov 26 16:32:43 otavio-iglesias-azeredos-acpi kernel[0]: vmmon: host clock rate change request 101 -> 0

Nov 26 16:32:43 otavio-iglesias-azeredos-acpi kernel[0]: vmmon: Cleaned up 54784 virtual main memory pages from VM 0x8a93004.

Nov 26 16:32:43 otavio-iglesias-azeredos-acpi kernel[0]: vmmon: Cleaned up 5279 monitor anonymous pages from VM 0x8a93004.

Nov 26 16:32:43 otavio-iglesias-azeredos-acpi kernel[0]: vmmon: Cleaned up 3126 user anonymous pages from VM 0x8a93004.

This problem doesn't happen if I use 2GB of memory, but only with 4GB.

    Regards,

PS. Posting the info you asked for.

    Build number. 62573

    Gigabyte GA-P965-DS3 - C2Q 6600 - 4GB RAM - Seagate 320GB

How often you see the problem - Frequently, if using 4GB of RAM.

What seems to trigger the problematic behavior - The simple fact of being using a Virtual Machine (Any, Windows XP, Solaris, Linux, etc)

If there are any conditions where it does work _ Yes, with 2GB of memory in the system-board

How experienced with OS X you are, and comfortable you are with the command line - Very confortable with comand line and I use MacOSX for 1 year, beside the fact of working with Solaris Kernel for 7 years.

    Regards,

    Otavio,

Do I read that you are not running this on a Mac, but on top of Mac OS X on a Gigabyte-based PC? We have not tested VMware Fusion on modified Mac OS X kernels required to make it work on a PC.

We do run VMware Fusion on 8 GB and 16 GB Macs with no problems internally and run over 20 VMs at a time during stress testing.

Please post the logs, but I am thinking that the issues could be:

    - Bad RAM

    - Bad kernel mods not liking more RAM

    I have a 4GB Macbook (Santa Rosa).

I run Fusion 1.1 with Vista on top of Leopard.

The 4GB RAM doesn't appear to be the problem, but there are real issues with Filevault.

    Hi all.

    There's no /Library/Logs/panic.log file.

I agree with you about the modified kernel. I´m going to test PC_EFI_V4, which is a new boot loader for hackintosh that by-pass the Bios and enable us to use a non modified kernel.

i will post the results of this test as soon as I try it.

Your original postings says "Mac" but later your saying you're running a hackintosh? VMware doesn't support "hackintoshes" please use real Apple hardware before asking for help.

Whoops, missed the part about a hackintosh. We don't support that, you're on your own.

    Hi All.

I`m sorry, but I though that it was a group of vmware users.

I understand that I`m trying to work on an unsupported platform, and as you work for vmware, it's really not the scope of your support.

Anyway, thanks alot for your attention.

    Best Regards,

    Otavio,

Feel free to ask users questions about VMware Fusion. However, the VMware people will not help troubleshoot issues on a hackintosh. We hope you understand.

Just to expand on your statement, we're a group of VMware users who use legally-licensed VMware and Apple software on supported hardware. If you want "hackintosh" support go to ther forums.

Apple has worked hard to develop their platform for their customers (hardware and software), you should consider not misapproprating their intellectual property. Not everything available for downloading on the Internet is right for use.
