Error creating new VM - No disk can be used for recovering.......

  • 1.  Error creating new VM - No disk can be used for recovering.......

    Posted Dec 05, 2011 10:07 PM

    Hello

I am trying to create a new VM from a W7 system image. Fusion4 recognises the external drive with the correct system image. On the next screen there is a message 'If you are unable to select an option above, installing the drivers for the disks you are restoring to might solve the problem'. The option above is a tick box that is grayed out 'Format & Repartition disks'. If I ignore this and continue on I eventually get the error - 'No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found'. It would appear I need to install drivers as suggested. My question is what drivers? Hard disk drivers for my MacBook Pro?

    Thanks for any assistance.

I am trying to create a new VM from a W7 system image.

I'll assume "W7" means Windows 7 however, what explicitly and specifically is a "W7 system image"?  I'm asking because "system image" is ambiguous due to lack of proper context and can mean many different things depending on context and other factors.

    Hi WoodyZ

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for being ambiguous. Yes Windows7 & system image was meant to mean a full system backup using the W7 create system image utility. This is driving me nuts. Fusion4 recognises my external system image but fails to install. I need to install drivers. I have spoken to Apple Support who have told me to do download these drivers using Bootcamp Assistant which I have done. But I am still unclear how to use the drivers. Fusion4 is after files of type 'Setup Information' which for the life of me I can't find anywhere. I spoke again to Apple and they have suggested I speak to VMWARE. I have left a message with them as I am in Australia and they are in US and not answering.

    Regards

    John

Okay it's a bit clearer however there is still missing information...

So do you have this image on an external USB Drive that you've attached to a new and empty Windows 7 Virtual Machine that you're booting with the Windows 7 Install Disc or ISO Image and are trying to restore this image to the new Windows 7 Virtual Machine?  (Or what?)

    Also...

To help figure out what is what the best way to provide comprehensive diagnostic information is to use the "Collect Support Information" command from the VMware Fusion (menu bar) > Help > Collect Support Information and then attach the .tgz file it created on your Desktop to a reply post.

Yes, image is on an external USB drive. As this is the first time I have used Fusion4 I am not sure quite yet if I have an empty W7 VM. I do know that I am booting W7 from the 'Repair Disk/Startup' for image recovery used when you do a system image recovery in W7.

I have turned on "Collect Support Information" as suggested.

I have turned on "Collect Support Information" as suggested.

This is not something you turn on, it is a command and it creates a .tgz file on your Desktop and you attach it to a reply post.

This way I can replicate what you're trying to do and see what and or how it needs to be done.

Maybe I should have sent this .tgz file as this is where I am getting stuck trying to install drivers?

Okay I created a Windows 7 System Restore Image and then created a new Windows 7 Virtual Machine and booted it with a Repair Disk made after the Image was made and had no problem restoring it to an empty new Virtual Machine like the one shown in your .tgz file.

I did not need to supply anything just boot the Virtual Machine with the Repair Disk and it found the System Image I had made on another drive and restored it without needing anything else.

So you'll need to provide more information, being very explicit and specific and provide screen shots as necessary.

    Hi Woody.

Here is the step by step process I am following.

    I start by Create New.

As I have the Windows 7 repair disk inserted into optical drive I get this message and click continue.

On the next screen it recognises the repair disk so I select Continue.

On the next screen I select Continue.

    Select Finish on next screen.

    Select Save on next screen.

    Select Next

    Connect USB drive to Windows.

    1

This screen defaulted to the button selected so hit Next.

System finds my backup image on USB drive so hit next.

This is where my problem starts. The message at the bottom of this screen is suggesting that I need to install drivers.

I get the following screen if I hit Exclude Disks.

If I ignore the driver message and hit next on that screen this is what I get.

I hit Finish and get this warning.

I hit Yes to the warning and the install starts but then stops and I get the following.

Why on earth have you inserted the Re: Error creating new VM - No disk can be used for recovering....... URL 15 times?  It just doesn't make any sense and you should be inserting .png images of the dialog boxes your coming across although I'd imagine there the same as I saw when I walked through the restore.

You shouldn't need any drivers or even need to pre-partition/pre-format the virtual hard disk the system restore image is going to be restored to.  I didn't do anything but walk through the wizard taking all the defaults and it was a done deal without error or issues.  I'm in the US so it's getting late and I'll look at this in the morning and restore my image to the Virtual Machine in the .tgz file and see if I have any issues.

Pardon my ignorance. I hit reply to your last email message and inserted the 15 screen shots as I went through the process of building the virtual machine. I then sent 1 email that had 15 screenshots. It is in my send folder as one email so I am unsure of your criticism. In any case I know you are doing your best to help me. Did you want me to send the single email again? The specific screen I am having problem is attached in this email. I hope I am not sending the URL you referenced for the 16th time.

I do not help in the forums through email, I work directly at the forum level in a web browser and you cannot insert images to display as a web page via email so no need to resend it.

I really was not trying to criticize and know I know why the URL got replicated 15 times as that apparently is how the forum software deals with embedded images in email. :smileysad:

If you have the time and want to do a TeamViewer session go to http://www.teamviewer.com and click the Join Remote Control Session link and then send me the ID and password by Private Message.

Or archive (compress) all the images into a single .zip file and attach it to a reply post from the forum in a web browser so I can see all the screen shots.  Everything looks fine in the .tgz file so I'll at least need to see the images or do a TeamViewer session is even better.

Would love to do Teamviewer. How do I reply by private message?

    Hi WoodyZ

Just confirming that due to the size of my last email that you did receive it. It had 15 attachments showing the step by step process (screen snapshots). It was about 3.5mb in size including the attachments.
