  • 1.  Importing a VM from Parallels

I'm trying to import an XP VM from Parallels and Fusion finds the file, but will not let me select it. I can't find anything about the problem in the knowledge base but that could be the search terms I'm using ("import", "import failure"). This is a new Fusion installation running through OSX 10.4.11 on an iMac. The XP Pro is an OEM version thats runs successfully under Parallels, but maybe the fact that it's OEM has something to do with it.

    Any suggestions?

If this Parallels 4? If yes then...

From the VMware Fusion 2.0.1 Release Notes - Known Issues

VMware Fusion 2 does not directly import Parallels Desktop 4 virtual machines.

Due to a recent change to the Parallels virtual machine file format,

VMware Fusion 2 can not directly import Parallels Desktop 4 virtual

machines. To work around this, download and install VMware Converter

for Windows in your Parallels virtual machine, uninstall Parallels

Tools, and run the VMware Converter to import the PC. Detailed steps

    are at .

Yes, it is from Parallels 4.0. I tried using the converter, and there are a couple of problems:

I have about 1 GB of disk space left (formatted as FAT32), so there is not enough space on the hard drive to convert the VM to a VM Fusion file. I can use an external drive, but only if the Parallels Tools remain installed.

When converting (using the external drive as the target for the new file), it stops at 2% and gives the message that the coversion has failed, possibly due to insufficient disk space.

I tried freeing up some diskspace but it seems that most of the disk is taken up by the XP OS.

    Any suggestions?
