I could have, but I'm just trying to follow the instructions laid out as part of the installation. I feel that would be more convenient.

Adding to what Akihiro already stated, the last GemFire release that included the examples as part of the distribution is 8.2.0, which has been out of support for quite a few years now. You should go ahead and directly use https://github.com/apache/geode-examples.
