how do I increase the timeout settings?

    Hello,

    After several months of sucessfull  scheduled Liveupdate  run  it  stopped working  , forcing me to everyday  manual update  :-(
    It happened  on two  W2003 servers with  SEPM at the same time.


    here is log from SEPM console:

    I tried to reinstall LiveUpdate  /  Document ID: 2007100907303548

    I tried also to  clean Virus Definitions folders and republish Live Update Product Inventory on Symantec
    Endpoint Protection Manager   /   Document ID: 2008041516215948

    nothing helped , the error is still

    so LUall.exe   downloads  definition files , and then it says that it cannot contact  server  !!  quite strange.

    if the problem remain same, increase the timeout setting for live update in Settings.LiveUpdate file located in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate"

    also check your Internet connection to the SEP server first.

    I tried to increase timeout settings

    "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate"
    to:
    PREFERENCES\INTERNET_CONNECT_TIMEOUT=145
    PREFERENCES\INTERNET_READ_DATA_TIMEOUT=145

    I stopped  services  :
    Symantec Settings Manager,
    Symantec Endpoint Protection  Manager
    Symantec Endpoint Protection

    and all other possible symantec services,  but after a while  the file was overvriten  back  to original values.

    so nothing changed

    connection to internet is functional , proxy is setuped properly,  the line is 4 Mbit  DSL  , working OK.

    And also according to log,   files are downloaded with LUall.exe ,    only with exception virus database update .

    I repeat  part of log:

    Downloading Antivirus and antispyware definitions Win32 11.0 MicroDefsB.CurDefs (1 of 1), 95% complete...

    Downloading failed, error summary...
    LU1835: The LiveUpdate server failed to respond in a reasonable amount of time. This could happen because you could not connect to the server, the server is now unavailable, or you became disconnected to the server. Try running LiveUpdate again.


    Interesting is that the log is every time the same -  maybe  there is some file  limit  ?      It is strange.

    Its getting blocked by your Hardware Network Firewall.Contact your Firewall administrator.Also add http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com to exception list in the firewall create a rule to not scan contents that gets downloaded from this site and not to compress downloaded files.(Content Scanning)

    Increase the timeto 600 default is 45.

    I tried to increase timeout settings

    "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate"
    to:
    PREFERENCES\INTERNET_CONNECT_TIMEOUT=145
    PREFERENCES\INTERNET_READ_DATA_TIMEOUT=145

    I stopped services :
    Symantec Settings Manager,
    Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
    Symantec Endpoint Protection

    and all other possible symantec services, but after a while the file was overvriten back to original values.

    so nothing changed

    Hi,

    I am in the path "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate" but I don't see any PREFERENCES file or folder.

    I have the same error, I have a proxy server that I really configured. If I run Liveupdate since "c:\Program files\Symantec\Liveupdate\LLUAL.exe" runs ok, but If O go to the Console and run Download Liveupdate Content I have the error "Error: LiveUpdate encountered one or more errors. Return code = 4" .

    Somebody have a good solution???

    Running MR4 MP1a.  After May 13th, our SEPM server just stopped updating.  Our clients are still able to contact Symantec directly, so they are all up to date.  I followed the steps in the article Grant posted.  They did not help.  Some info:

    We do not use a proxy server.  Our SEP installation has been up and running without any update issues for well over a year.  We have not made any firewall or routing changes recently.  I tried, in order:

    1)  Running LU manually when I saw the server definitions were dated May 13.
    2)  Rebooted the server and ran LU again.
    3)  Cleaned out the LU Cache and allocated an additional 200MB for updates (present use was 460MB with roughly 520 allocated).  Ran LU again.  Failed.224
    4)  Manually downloaded the current 32-bit definiitions and was able to at least update them via the intelligent updater.  Ran LU again and it still failed.
    5)  Increased the time-out settings from 45 to 600 and ran LU again.
    6)  Reinstalled LU and ran LU again.
    7)  Reregistered LU using the lucatalog -update command from the proper directory and ran LU again.

    After all of that, LU still failed on the SEPM server.  Finally, I did one last thing:

    8) Deleted the contents of the All Users\App Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Downloads from Windows Explorer.  I thought this would have been done during step 3 above, but I guess not?  Lo and behold!  It worked!

    Curious, but at least I'm back up and running.  Perhaps some others might find this useful as well.

    This is how I solve my proble with regard to the issue above..It seems like the issue is caused by the firewall. Increasing the timeout allows the firewall more time to scan the packets from the live update server. Try to whitelist or write an exception for outbound traffic from your server’s IP address as well.

    this has always been the worse part of any symantec antivirus product going back SAVCE.  everytime I install this product regardless of name or version (currently fighting with endpoint protection center V12), it always takes me many days and dozens of hours of wasted time and money.   

    none of the articles posted are anywhere near enough guidance to get through the problem.   my server is behind a MS ISA / Proxy server, and the internet works just fine.   why cant this F'ing thing just work?

    - what ports besides 443 are required?
    - LUALL starts and stumbles and goes away before you can read it all.  it connects to various symantec.com sites.
    - enhanced security in IE is the cause????  I've tried it on and off.
    - I've tried use proxy and no proxy.  windows auth, and no auth.
    - lucatalog -update (does nothing helpful)

    anyone have other suggestions, besides trying MS new security essentials for free?

    - symantec liveupdate
    - interactive mode
    - change FTP and HTTP to use "My IE Settings" or similar.

    I guess I spoke too soon.
    I was able to get the LUALL to run from command prompt .... mostly.  it downloads and installs many things, but still fails with:
    Installing Virus and Spyware definitions (1 of 1), failed.
    LU1825: LiveUpdate could not understand how to install this update.  You may need to get the latest version of LiveUpdate before you can install this update.
    Installing Submission Control signatures (1 of 1), failed.
    LU1825: LiveUpdate could not understand how to install this update.  You may need to get the latest version of LiveUpdate before you can install this update.
    Installing Symantec Security Software (1 of 1), failed.
    LU1825: LiveUpdate could not understand how to install this update.  You may need to get the latest version of LiveUpdate before you can install this update.

    at least I'm getting current definitions to show up on the status / home screen of SEP
