  • 1.  Migrating SEPM database from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008

    Posted Jul 20, 2011 05:18 AM

    Hello,

I have very quick question. Soon we are going to migrate our SEPM database from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008. Do we have to un-install SQL server 2005 client components from the SEPMs and install SQL server 2008 client components before we migrate the database or it will be working with the old one?

    Thanks

hi Rafeeq, so from this I understand that we have to install SQL server 2008 client components on the SEPMs. Can we do it over the existing SQL server 2005 client components or do we need to un-install them first and then to install for 2008?

    Hi,

    1. Backup the SEPM server certificate As per Disaster Recovery Steps.
    2. Backup the existing SQL 2005 database using SQL backup
    3. Uninstall the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
    4. Uninstall Microsoft SQL 2005 clients tools
    5. Install Microsoft SQL 2008 client tools
    6. Steps to perform on the SQL 2008 Server

a). Copy SQL 2005 backup Database to SQL 2008
    b). Attach the database
c). Change the compatibility mode to 2008a
d). Create a user which will have admin rights on the
    database

    7. Reinstall the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
    8. In Management Server Configuration Wizard point it to the
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and use the existing database, when it asks
that the server exist do you want to overwrite click yes
    9. Restore the SEPM server certificate.

You need too, however since you have performed a disaster recovery; all your policies ; clients will still communicate after the new install

    Hi,

It is always recommended to do this because when you migrate your database there is a disconnection between SEPM and database.

We recommend two things 1) Take a backup of SEPM (Disaster recovery) 2) Uninstall SEPM & Reinstall SEPM after database migration.
