Well im told CMS 8.5 will be out tomorrow for download so I will be starting a test environment up pretty quick. Just CMS and not ITMS. but will have VSR-MS 18 as well (veritas system recovery management solution 18).

so who is going to start testing immediately? We need to get our environment to Server 2016 and SQL 2016 and both supported.

also who is going to the technical workshops in Chicago in October? I will be there...

    well only 2 concerns...

    1. silverlight is still needed - thought silverlight was gone...

    2. now i have to wait for VSR to update to a newer version...

I think the Silverlight removal is going to take a while, it's a balance between adding new features and updating, I think the priority is new features, I know a lot of the Reporting side was being transferred over but I'm not sure of the timescales.

Yes, I figured it would take some time. Just caught me off guard after it was pointed out in a video (cant recall which it was) that it was totally removed. So was interesting.

All in all the install was straight forward and easyily accomplished. Just some side quirks im working out like licensing, etc... but still  up and running now.

The requirement for the SMP to be on 2012 R2+ we figured was coming down just sucks no heads up.

Any good ideas on how to upgrade from 2008 R2 SMP to 2016 SMP?

    Hello everyone,

I have tried installing CMS 8.5 twice in a Windows Server R2 VM test environment running on VMware. However, it always fails in the same error.

Has anyone had this same problem?

    Harold,

I havent seen any issues in a VM as I have installed it at work and at home in a test lab. You say Server R2 VM... Which server version? R2 usually fell after 2008 or 2012 and I dont think Server 2016 will have the R2 distinction. Just curious.

also onbox SQL or off box?

so server version and sql version?

I am by far saying I know what im doing (albeit I know a little since ive used the product since 5.0!!!)

Here is my play video account. I am horrible at tutorials but have a run through...

yeah... Server 2012 R2 is going end of life next in just a year and 6 days for extended support so yes definitely knew it was coming, but I thought they wouldnt "Require" a Server OS minimum...

    Hello,

It's just a Windows Server 2012 R2 installation on a virtual machine. jejej

Your installation videos are for 2016 Server OS. I have not tried 2016 yet. Probably will, if it fails for the third time.

    Off-SQL Server version 2014.

Let you know how it goes the third installation. :)

I would definitely go Server 2016 and SQL 2016.... Sql server 2014 non SP1 is what was needed before and I would definitely get away from that as it too is going EOL!!!!

yeah let me know how it goes. I am wondering who else is going to it and issues. these forums seem dead though so tough to get an idea, or so many people are installing and/or having issues that they are too busy to come here [:-P>

Third time and same error again.

I guess we should try to install on a 2016 OS. Let's see

I’ve done full ITMS on 2016 with no issues, but not sure that helps if you’re doing just CMS. Please do raise a Support Case as examples are useful and the quicker fixes can be added to RU1, if necessary.

    Hi Harold,

may it be the case that you have Windows 2012 R2 without all latest updates?

There is a new issue in 8.5 release described in the release notes:

PPA installation may fail on the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system.

Workaround: Before starting the installation of IT Management Suite or Remote Monitoring Service, install the Microsoft update KB2919355 on your server

    Thanks,

    Grigory.

My 2012 R2 Server has KB2919355 already installed.

I tried running windows update before installing, but Server didnt restart properly because of these updates (A Windows Server thing, i guess?)

I will try installing a couple of times more. If doesnt work, i'll raise a case with Symantec Support.

However, i have upgraded a couple of itms 8.1 installations with 2012 R2 OS and all went well.

I guess issue is when installing only. :/

Ive noticed some nice things in 8.5 but then also some annoyances. Example is on patch page. If you set custom severities, you need to refresh the page where in 7.6 it auto refreshed... silverlight?

Just found out a bug in 8.5.

Deployment Automation Folder for Install Policy cannot be enable. It is not possible via enabling with right-click nor enable the ON and OFF button.

    Anybody has this issue too?

Trialing 8.5 on a 2016 vm server.  Seems to be working, I am sure all my issues are just learning the new system.

We are suposed to be able to upgrade from 2008R2 to 2012 ans 2012 to 2016

I'm planning to try it and since the NS is virtual it is easy to try.

Does someone tried to upgrade the OS?

Set up our 8.5 server last week and installing RU1 now.  I decided we won't migrate clients since we have a big rollout coming to win10, users will get on new server when they get their new computers or are reimaged.

So far I've created a base win10 image (capture task for some reason ran twice, creating 2 image files, but only the first image is usable).  I only ran one capture task so far, so soon will see if it does it again.  I cleaned up the image that shouldn't have captured a 2nd time and deployed the first one with some software install tasks in the image job without issue.

Haven't set up patch yet.  I did enable time critical management, but don't think our technicians will use the new views offered in 8.5.  They've been using the console for 10+ years so there doesn't seem to be a need for it here.  Really hoping that software portal can be improved to install software immediately & not require sign in so our users can use it.  It would be a huge selling point for CMS for us.

Ideas to thumbs up if anyone else interested in these portal improvements

Software Portal - please make software install immediately

Software portal - don't require users to set up account
