    Hello,

    Yes it's mandatory for running these service when you want to patch updatation activity in xp and windows 7 system,

    You can verify these service are started mode for above mention also you can run the patch software update cycle by command line.

    How can I start a Patch software update cycle from the command line?

    hello,

    If you want to verify you can check manually or wait next Windows System Assessment Scan schedule.

    You can find report patch compliance report after running Windows System Assessment Scan

    All reports ->Software->Patch Managment->compliance

    I am just going to add this link that may help if the updates fail to install by manually running the update files (without using Altiris). There are several suggestions by MS.
