Clean install of Server 2008 R2 (Service Pack 1 not installed) and every time I run SIM to install Altiris, it falls over with the error message

Installation of Symantec Installation Manager cannot proceed.  The following requirement(s) were not met:

Microsoft Windows Server 200 R2 64 bit edition of Windows is required.

    Installer will now exit

Did you get the latest version of the SIM from the download site?

Not sure.  That's odd.  Is UAC disabled?  I would try disabling UAC, uninstall SIM, reboot, redownload, install SIM, and try it again.

UAC is off, downloaded SIM again, deleted all files from temp folder, and still the same after a reboot. All updates are installed upto SP1

I belive we had the similar problem with installing SIM to domain controller. Could it be the case?

    Thank you,

    Alex.

Hi Alex, this is a DC as well - how did you get round this??

    Hi Mark,

Actually, this is a setup restriction since NS 6x - it is impossible to install NS to domain controller. But on NS 6x the error reporting in this case was better.

    Thank you,

    Alex.

Alex, will the message be fixed in a future SIM release?

What is the exact value in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Microsoft\CurrentVersion for the ProductName?  This is the reg key we use to determine if you are running the correct OS.

    Hi Andrew,

I've not got a  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Microsoft\CurrentVersion key in the registry but I do have HKLM\Software\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion ProductName and the value is Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

Yeah, sorry for the incorrect path.  Anyway, I spoke with the SIM team and they have confirmed that installation is not allowed on a domain controller.  That is the reason why you are seeing the message.  I have asked them to enhance that message a bit to clearly state that it cannot install because a DC has been detected.

Thanks for the info Andrew - is there any way that I can install the Deploymeny Solution onto a domain controller?  If not, then I need to go back to the dsitribuitor as they advised that this would work in the environment I've got (one server running AD for a network of about 70-80 PC's)

No, not that I am aware of - maybe others have some ideas?

You can do DS 6.9 SP5.. but it's a mess.  And you can't do any imaging or DOS execution according to the documentation.

According to the corresponding incident track records message already fixed in ITMS 7.1.SP1.
