  • 1.  Managed Software Delivery - Validation Rule Question

    Posted Jun 04, 2010 01:28 PM
    Greetings,

I am just getting started with migrating software packages from our NS 6 server to our new NS 7 server. I've setup a few and am doing testing of the delivery to make sure I have the compliance pieces setup correctly.

My question is this: When I change the Detection Rule the MSD Policy is using and save it, does the Configuration need to be updated on the agent to utilize the updated Detection Rule? Currently when I do this and click "Update" on the agent, the Configuration is not updated. How do I verify that it's using the latest Detection Rule?

    Bonus questions:
What's the best resource for learning the syntax needed on the various Smart Rules, such as for detecting if a file exists? And, can a Targeted Inventory find files other than exe and dll?

Thank you kindly for your assistance,
    Geo

    Hi George,

I'll try to answer to your original question:
    >>When I change the Detection Rule the MSD Policy is using and save it, does the Configuration need to be updated on the agent to utilize the updated Detection Rule? Currently when I do this and click "Update" on the agent, the Configuration is not updated. How do I verify that it's using the latest Detection Rule?

Update of configuration on the client side is required to get latest updates made to MSD policy assigned to the client. But after configuration is updated, then MSD policy should get the updated rule. Is "configuration changed" time updated after you refresh configuration on the client after chasnging the detection rule?

    Thanks,
    Andrew.

    Hi,
I was wondering the same thing. No the config date is not updated when making a change to the detection rule. However the new rule does seem to be applied.

But I'm not 100% convinved how this is happening?
    Any ideas?

According to my knowledge any updates to MSD policies are going via configuration updates on Altiris Agent. Not sure why you are not observing configuration updates in your case. But as I have understood everything is working fine in any case?

    Thanks,
    Andrew.

Hi Andrew, yes you are correct. For some reason this didn't happen correctly at first and then some time elapsed and the MSD policy updated correctly... not sure why the lag.
