  • 1.  Update the Dell Service Tag with Symantec/Altiris NS?

Can I update the Dell Service tag in the BIOS with a hardware configuration job in the NS6 or NS7 environment?   Not the "asset tag" (which changes fine), but the Dell Svc Tag.  We have a Dell bootable utility that can do, but I can't seem to change it with NS (and the dell client pack added).

For example, we have laptop where the motherboard was swapped out and now Altiris reports the incorrect svc tag and the outside sticker label does not match what the bios says.  Since we have svc tag info in our naming convention, this is important to be accurate.  Thanks,

My understanding is no.  This has been asked a few other times for Dell and HP.  If it's just one system, I would consider just using the Dell utility.

If you run scripts in the utility, or can run scripts, then you could try loading it in a pre-automation environment like WinPE, load the utility, and then execute the script.

I can run a DOS command line utility (abcd.com for example).  How do I run abcd.com /s 0000 from winPE?

Run a batch command script set to run in automation:

     Reboot to WinPE

     Run script

     Reboot to production

Should work.  If it does, certainly post back -- because folks have been stumped on this topic before.

Boots into automation fine, can't seem to get the script to run though.  For example

    \\server\eXpress\Dell\ascripts\Asset.com /s 000

    Y

Does not seem to change the svc tag.

I haven't tried it in a while...but last time I did, Dell Asset.com has to be run from DOS, not WinPE.  Can you boot to WinPE and get an interactive CMD prompt?  One trick for this seems to be:

    cmd.exe /k start cmd.exe

Can you run asset.com from that command prompt?  If not, you may need to boot to a FreeDOS preboot environment to execute the asset.com.

Also...not sure if htis would help, but I found it on the Dell FTP site:

    ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/utility/AssetTagA01.zip

It looks like it actuall has to run from the "EFI Shell"...so unless you know a way to get into that and automate it...maybe not much help!
