    Here is the scenario.

    1. Email notification originates from an application server local to my network and relayed through SMG.

    2. Server IP has been added to list of ip addresses in

Administration -> Configuration -> Edit Host Configuration -> SMTP -> Outbound -> Outbound Mail Acceptance

    3. Email hits SMG 10.5.1-2 with this info on the log "Attempted Delivery to: "Non-Local MTA IP":25 550 5.7.1 anonymous client does not have permissions to send as this sender"

    4. Sender's domain is not my local network domain/Recipient domain is also sender's non-local doamin. Really, the fact is that they use a software in my domain that generates a notification so the from address has to be the non-local address of the sender.

    5. Sender gets this:

Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups:

Your message wasn't delivered due to a permission or security issue. It may have been rejected by a moderator, the address may only accept e-mail from certain senders, or another restriction may be preventing delivery.

    Diagnostic information for administrators:

    Generating server: SMG FQDN

    recipient@domain.com
#< #5.7.1 smtp; 550 5.7.1 Anonymous client does not have permissions to send as this sender> #SMTP#

Please advise on what I need to do.

    Thanks

You need to turn basic authentication on in your mail server so the SMG can send through it. The SMG doesn't have the ability to authenticate to another MTA.

I'm wondering if I need to do that because the application server is configured to relay the email notifications through SMG. Secondly, the emails is outbound so I don't think it's headed for the mail server.

The problem really is not that emails are not routed from the app server through SMG. When users from our local domain generate notification from that server it delivers okay. The problem occurs only when the person generating the notification has a non-local email address.

    Did I overlook something here?

It sounds like you may be overlooking that the message you posted above is what the SMG was told when it tried to deliver the email. You should look at the Message Audit Logs to determine where the SMG was trying to deliver the email if you are not sure if it is the mail server or not. The fact that it only happens with non-local domains makes it sounds like it is.

Well, SMG attempted to deliver to the MTA at the non-local domain. So, if the error message was what SMG was told, then it appears SMG was trying to relay through that MTA, I am just wondering if the email shouldn't be hitting the non-local MTA as delivery rather than relay.

If relay it is then, does it mean that the non-local MTA needs to be configured to relay emails for my domain?

It needs to be configured to let the SMG relay through it, however that is done with that product.
