How can I get remotely the serial number from an SMS8240 with system 7.6.0-6?

The serial is required to register for slf: This is on registration page:

 

Appliance Serial Number  
A valid Appliance Serial Number is required to activate the product on a specific machine. Your product documentation contains instructions for obtaining your appliance serial number. 
 
I could not find any information about it in the mentioned product documentations.

I don't believe you can get the serial number from the web interface or the console.  You will need to get the appliance serial number from the sticker on the device itself.

It's been several years since I initially registered our appliances, so I don't remember what we did, but from reading the online docs, it looks like you should have received some info, possibly an email, that contains the serial numbers for the features you purchased.  I think entering those numbers would give you the .slf file.

As a last resort, give Symantec support a call.  They should be able to help you.  From past experience, I'd suggest you plan on spending quite a bit of time on hold though.

Ooops, how the virtualized version working? There is no serial number.

That's a very good question.  The Virtual Appliance is a fairly new thing and I haven't heard how much about how it works yet.  I assume you download the ISO image and install it in a virtual machine the same as on the physical appliance.

I've actually thought about trying it out, but I think we'll stick with the physical appliances.

This is probably a question best left to Symantec to answer.  Any support employees monitoring the conversation?

To register a Virtual Edition currently you have to enter "VIRTUAL" as the serial number. There will be a change to that registration screen in the coming weeks.

Thank You very much, I wasted now over an hour of my time searching for this info on all of the Symantec webs. Strange, that search on this web didnt return what I wanted, but then, google did.

Glad you found the answer in the end. I'll see if I can find out why we don't index and include these posts in the main Symantec site search results or at least provide a pointer.
