  • 1.  Multiple partitions, drive letters

    Hi all,

I'm attempting to ghost a machine with a single disk and 2 partitions, a C: drive and an X: drive.  When I restore the image to an identical machine, the X drive becomes the D drive, so it's losing the drive signatures.  Both machines have identical hardware, physical drives, and drive space.  The partitions are the same size on both machines.

I am using the -FDSP switch on both the dos command to launch ghost on the computer (during image creation and restore), and in Ghostcast on the "Command Line" under "More Options":
    -clone,mode=restore,src=@mchono,dst=2 -fdsp
    I'm using Ghost 11.

I'm still losing the drive signatures.  Any ideas of other things I can try?

Thanks in advance for your help,
    -Danny

    Hi Danny,

I just noticed dst=2 in the command line. Is it a typo or do you use two disks in the destination machine?

Though Ghost preserves disk signature, the partition layout should be identical for Windows to use it. When cloning, do you change the partition sizes?

    Hi Krish,

Thanks for replying.  Disk 1 is the USB key that I'm using to boot the machine.  Disk 2 is the hard drive.   This is the same on both the original machine and the clone.

The hard drive has 3 partitions:
55 MB diagnostic partition (Dell created this)
    30 GB System partition, C:
    45 GB Logical partition, X:

All three show up in the cloned machine, and the partition sizes are all the same, but the X: drive is now D:.

    Thanks again for your help,

    -Danny

    Hi Danny,

When you boot the machine to Windows, do you still keep the USB key connected?

    Hi Krish,

Yes, I'm leaving the USB connected (and I tried it unconnected).  I could try removing it as soon as Ghost has started so that it sees the hard drive as Disk 1.  Any other way for Ghost to ignore it, maybe?

    Thanks for your help,
    -Danny

    Hi Danny,

No, I was wondering if you boot while it is there, whether Windows re-discover the hardware since the drive index is changed.

However, I did some more investigation. In 11.x, we updated the mounted devices with the new information. Have you tried restoring it without using -FDSP ?

    Hi Krish,

I decided to do a little more investigating in my procedures and I've now determined that it was sysprep that was removing the drive letters.  I should have mentioned that in my initial post but I didn't think it mattered.  Sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase.  :smileysad:

    Here's Microsoft's info about it.

Sorry again, and thanks for your help.

    Hi Danny,

Thanks a lot for the update. I didn't know about this sysprep behavior either - now I know :-)

This kb article describes the known 'issues' with sysprep.  "Drive letter assignment" is listed under System Properties.

    Hope that helps,
