    Posted Apr 23, 2008 03:05 PM
I have an image that was created with Ghost 8.0.  I have Ghost 2003, Ghost 2002 and Ghost 9.  Which product will work with this image?

    Thank you!

I believe I have the consumer edition:smileymad: so I think this answers my question:
    Consumer Edition
    Norton Ghost 2003 = (uses Ghost 8.0) - August 2002
    Norton Ghost 9.0 - August 2004
    Norton Ghost 10.0 - September 2005
    Norton Save & Restore - February 2006
    Norton Ghost 12.0 - February 2007
    Norton Ghost 14.0 - February 2008

So I am expecting to successfully accomplish my goal.

I believe I have the consumer edition

That's correct, 2002 and 2003 were the only consumer editions of real Ghost. Both were actually offshoots of the 7.x line of the business edition of Ghost - Ghost 2003 is actually version 7.6, since it was developed from the 7.5 code base in parallel with the development of the 8.0 business edition. There was some crossover between the two, but Ghost 2003 is essentially derived from Ghost 7.5

    Norton Ghost 9.0 - August 2004

This is the point at which the consumer products ceased being actual Ghost, since following the PowerQuest acquisition we were placed under their management and they took the brands we had built and applied them to the PowerQuest products.

However, since PowerQuest's products did not run on any OS earlier than Windows 2000, these products at first contained Ghost 2003 bundled with them, and at some point they included a version of the 32-bit version of real Ghost on their "recovery CD". Since our team weren't involved with those products I'm not sure what the precise version history is, but the RESTOREGHOST.EXE included with "Norton Ghost" came from one of our internal builds in the 8.0 series and will restore images taken from 8.0

I have no idea whether the ability to restore .GHO images is still present in the current product - I suspect that they do not - but 9 and 10 definitely had that capability.

Am also using RestoreGhost.exe from the Norton Ghost 10.0 retail install/system recovery disk in an attempt to restore a legacy Ghost 2003-created '.gho' image to a disk for one of NASA's legacy machines.

Have noticed that this image passes integrity/validity checks within Ghost 2003 just fine without complaint (numerious times), but will NOT restore to any kind of fixed disk, be it IDE, SCSI or SATA for that matter.

Restoration process gets about 10-11% of the way through and then the process dies.

Tried a restore of this image using (DOS-based) Ghost 2003 natively with the same result.

Doesn't matter if the image is on optical media (spanned over 8 writable CDs) or on an external USB fixed disk (.gho span files copied from the CDs to the fixed disk) the result is the same; it passes an image validity verification test and fails to restore to any fixed disk.

Can anybody assist here? Is there any interest in working with this legacy format to restore legacy machines so that they can be re-archived using more modern tools?

    Thanks...

Have included the text of the GHOSTERR.TXT file in the hope that it may be of value here...

    Thanks, again...
