  • 1.  Ghost task hanging

We are using Symantec Ghost version 8.3.0.1331 and whenever i try to run a task that includes all the following Task Steps:

    -Clone
    -Configuration
    -Transfer Files
    -Execute Commands
    -Deploy AI Package

The task just hangs at a certain point (in the log for example it would still list the latest Success action, like changing logon-settings or config refresh), the task status at the bottom of the Ghost Console screen says its still running. It will easily run for hours and hours, obviously something wrong there (loop?).

Whenever i split the task-steps into multiple tasks and run them seperately it works fine.
So for example i just make a task that clones and changes configuration and run it, it works fine.
After i start another task with the rest of the above listed task steps and it runs fine also.

So it seems that a combination of the above all in one task causes this behaviour.
Any thoughts or ideas on how to resolve this?
    Is this a known bug?

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Hi there,

What OS are you running on the client machine? Is it XP? There is an issue related with XP and file transfer in 8.3. Also, what is the status of the client while the task executes indefinitely (after the last success step that you mentioned) - is it in Windows or in DOS? Is the client connected to the console at this point? If the client is in Windows and you restart the client (while the task is running and after it gets stuck), does the task complete?
Please let me know, so I can guide you further.

    Hi Adina,

Thanks very much for getting back.

What OS are you running? Windows XP, Service Pack 2

There is an issue related with XP and file transfer in 8.3. In our case, if we run it seperately we have no problems as for now.

What is the status of the client - is it Windows or in DOS? Its in Windows and its status seems busy (this is also the message in windows)

Is the client connected to the console at this point? Yes, the client says the task is running and so is the Ghost Console.

If the client is in Windows and you restart the client, does the task complete?
After restarting the ghost service the task indeed continues (in my case it succesfully deployed two AI packages) and then hangs again (before completing the other steps). I tried restarting it a second time and indeed now it finished everything successfully!

Thanks again for helping out Adina!

Yes, it looks like the issue I was talking about - XP and File Transfer. The only workaround I can suggest at this point and with 8.3 version is to restart the client or to break the task in two different tasks, which you already did. This problem was fixed in GSS 2.
