I am trying to image a laptop with ghost8 and after it completes I reboot and receive an error message "Invalid partition table". Not sure what could be causing the issue. I am unsing bartpe to boot (CD). Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Ghost 8.0 to my knowledge had no Win32 support. It was only running under DOS - how come you run it under Winpe?

Yes, but ghost 8.0 doesnt run under Winpe! BartPE is winpe. Ghost 8.3 was the first win32 release of ghost32.exe to my knowledge.

What OS are you cloning? Just in case it is Vista then anything earlier than 11.0 will not clone it correctly.

    It is XP.

Can you please run gdisk/gdisk32 depending on your environment (DOS or Winpe) like so:

    gdisk 1

    gdisk 1 /view:0

where 1 is your HD ID. I presume that you only have a single disk that you clone to.

    And post both outputs?

    It is Ghost 8.2

Sorry - my fault I already asked this question once :)

8.2 was 2003 edition and it was a consumer release hence why no extra tools like gdisk etc. You can try fdisk to have a look at partition table (not very friendly) or you can download trial version of GSS 2.5 (ghost 11.5) from www.ghost.com to see whether this helps you. Try restoring same image using 11.5 to same machine - I am sure you'll have no problems. But first run gdisk on this machine. I dont know why you would have "invalid table" but gdisk will tell you exactly what your table is so we can take it from there.

I am still abit puzzled how would you run 8.2 (DOS) on BartPE but it is a different question.

    Cheers.

I was able to create an ISO winpe bootable cd from the trial version of the Ghost solution suite that you directed me to. After i booted to the newly created winpe i was able to run the gdisk and perform a low level format wipe of the drive that i was having the issue with. I am now re-imaging the laptop and will post the outcome.

Unable to allocate conventional memory is very serious indeed. It is either something bad with your motherboard or memory. Could be BIOS too but not likley so. Can you please verify?

Sorry Eugene but the error referencing the memory was before i created the gdisk boot cd. I was running the gdisk.exe from the ghost explorer in Bartpe and it logged the memory error. After i created the gdisk boot cd i was able to run gdisk32.exe successfully. When i run Gdisk32.exe i get the following message "gdisk32 (w) fixed disk 1 does not have an active partition.

I knew it does not - otherwise it will try to boot. Hence why I asked you to run following commands:

    gdisk 1

    gdisk 1 /view:0

    Thanks.

I am unable to run gdisk 1, i have to enter in gdisk32 1 and this is what i get:

GDISK32 (W) Fixed disk 1 does not have an active partition

    Disk:1, partition:1, cylinders: 15505, Heads: 240, Sectors:63, MBytes: 114473.5, Model WDC WD1200BEVBS- 08UST0

Partition c: 1, Status: is blank, Type: PRIMARY, Volume Label: is blank, MBYTES: 114470.5, System: NTFS/HPFS, Usage: 99%

Then i ran GDISK32 1/view:0 and got the following:

GDISK32 (W) Fixed disk 1 does not have an active partition

    GDISK32 (E) Invalid fixed disk number -- 1/view:0

Thanks. Yes you cannot run gdisk - it DOS exe. gdisk32 is a windows version.

Can you run gdisk32 1 /a /p:1. This will activate partition one. Can you also run "gdisk32 1 /view:0" with space between 1 nad /view?

  • 25.  RE: invalid partition table

    Posted Jan 15, 2009 04:41 PM

When i run gdisk32 1 /a /p:1 i get the same message as before about no active partition and then it reads (e) unknown switch -- /a

When i run gdisk32 1 /view:0, i get a bunch of info but there is no way of copying it so i can post it. It does mention on the right hand side "Invalid partition table. Error loading operating system. Missing operating system.

    Posted Jan 15, 2009 04:53 PM

Sorry it is /act not /a. You can always type /? for help.

Bunch of info doesnt help me - you can always cut/paste from command prompt. But fact that you have "invalid partition table" is good - it sounds like proper MBR.

yea sorry about that.  I typed gdisk32 1 /act /p:1 and it now has an "A" under Status. How do i copy and paste from dos. I know i can highlight the message by ctrl c but were do i copy the info to?

This is not DOS - it is a command prompt window under Windows. Click on system menu - left-top corner and select edit. Once you selected what you want press Enter. Then run notepad and paste it. You can also try rebooting your machine now that you set first partition as active.

Eugene, after i ran the gdisk32 1 /act /p:1 and it added the "A" to the status of the c: i rebooted and it now loaded the OS. Thank you very much for all your help. You were extremly helpful. Is there some sort of email address i can send to your boss and let them know what a wonderful job you have done. Really thanks a lot.
