Symantec PGP Encryption

  • 1.  Windows 7 MBR Question

    Posted Apr 06, 2017 10:14 PM

My main boot drive is encrypted. I use Acronis to rountinely backup the drive and I understand that the backups are unencrypted. In the event of a disaster, would I be able to restore from a backup and then use the Windows 7 installation disk to rebulid the MBR and effectively remove the encryption information from the boot sectors ?

    Thanks,

    Mike

There can be 2 Scenarios here:

    1. You are trying backup after the installation of the new OS:

You may just restore the backup on the newely installed OS or use Acronis.

    2. You are trying to Rebuild the MBR with a Windows 7 CD which is already modified by the Symantec Encryption.

No you cant use the windows 7 disk to rebuild the MBR .Also rebuilding the MBR wont change the whole Drive Encryption State.

    Hello Mike,

If a system hard disk has been fully decrypted, and will not boot, make sure to slave the disk and backup all your data, or use bit-by-bit copy of the disk. Connect the hard disk back to system and run the fixmbr command from the Windows Recovery Console from a Windows XP installation CD.
