install packages on client groups

  • 1.  install packages on client groups

    Hello,

Im getting the idea something is not really working ok and would like to ask you your oppinion.

On the moment i have several groups,  only working with the standard features antivirus and antispam settings.

I also created a new group with all features enabled, i added a install package to this group --> select with features to use --> all endpoint features.

Now when i move a client to this new "high secure" group, will the features be installed trow the install package if the are not enabled / installed yet?

    Thx,

    LEVD

The package will be installed to the clients when you move between groups

when you assign packages to the groups there is a service called smcinst.exe
SMCINST.EXE is related to Symantec Auto-upgrade Agent.
If you have assigned any package or assigned the package to upgrade to MR5 autoupgrade this service will start.
you can see the logs too inside Symantec Endpoint Protection folder once the upgrade is complete
when you assign package is checked, the clients start the above service and get the configured feature set installed.

Well its not really an upgrade i want to preform on a specific group the version is the latest on the client, i only want to have more features installed /  enabled on the clients in the group i have.

Will it work when the clients allready have the newest version? but only need more features installed?

Yes it would work, when you assign a package to a group ( you need to change what new feature you need to install)
the autoupgrade service will be activated and will run an install of the missing component
no matter what feature  you select by default everything will be install however they wont be active
the service you run a modify install of what you have in add/remove programs, I have checked it, you can put one machine in a group with diff package assinged, you can see the msiexec.exe running after few mins...

Yes it works Great i justed tested it :) i did it by altering the existing client install package.

However i still have a question regarding creating a new install package, which source folder for package building files do i need to choose?

If i choose a standard one im getting this error:

    Naamloos.jpg
    Thx,

Creating custom client installation packages in the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager console

I  think you are using the option add instantiation package.Use the above doc for creating package.

you can add a new client install packages ( newer than your manager version or older one)
you are trying to add package to your SEPM
in that case you need to browse to sepm cd1 packages folder (newer or older version)
    admin - servers- install packages
when creating the package uncheck single exe, select setup.exe, add it here
once done go to the group, there will be another add package option select that, use the drop down menu to add your custom one...
    add it to the group
