  • 1.  urgent! - transferring Symantec endpoint protection to a new computer as my current one is dead - but I have some questions

    Posted Aug 25, 2014 05:52 PM

I'm currently looking to find out how to transfer my Symantec endpoint protection  (sep) to another computer with a different ip - here are my questions .

First off. The new computer I'll be transferring my sep into I'm not sure if it will have a different IP address, from googling around there are different methods if the new computer will have the same IP. my new computer will be on the same home network but I'm unsure if the IP will be the same so I'm assuming that it will be different.

So from googling around Iv found how to transfer my sep to my new computer this is what I'm planning to do -

    1. Install sep on the new computer.

    2. I copy my sylink.xml file from my old computer. Onto a USB and that's on standby for my new computer.

    3. On my new computer I'll go to start > run > smc -stop > press ok

    4. Copy the sylink.xml file into my sepm program files over righting any existing one.

    5. Start > run > smc -start > press ok

That's what I'm planning to do. Since that's what I will transfer everything. As I was looking at my sep thou Iv noticed this

"The following Symantec. Protection technologies are installed on your computer:

    Antivirius and antispyware protection

    Proactive threat protection"

Since sep was already installed on my computer I'm not sure if these two technologies are installed with the program and doing my method will just transfer my liceness over, making everything ok.

Or will I have to doewnload these and install them, what will copying sylink.xml do in that case. I'm assuming copying it over will just validate my sepm ?

    I'm running version : 11.0 4000.2295

There is no way to transfer it, you just uninstall from old and install to new. When you go thru the setup just add the components that you need.

Also, you're running a very old, End of Life version.

Now if you need SEPM to be moved, see here:

    Hi,

Plan looks perfect but SEP 11.0 4000.2295 is very old version.

SEP 11 RU7 MP4 (11.0.7400.1398) is the latest version. It's strongly recommended to use the latest version of SEP.

As per thread it seems only moving single SEP client. It's very easy, install the latest verison of SEP & replace the Sylink.xml to restore the communication if it's a managed client.

More info about Sylink.xml is available here:

Is this a managed or self-managed client? Help and Support>Troubleshooting>Management>Server:

Did you get your SEP 11 from your employer for home use? If so, your company's IT department may be able to provide a latest generation SEP 12.1 installer. Preferable to using the old SEP 11.

If you don't have access to a new SEP installer, you may want to consider one of the Norton consumer products.

If it is unmanaged client and if you have the download you can install. Again product support going to end. If you do not have download. Then you have to go for 12.1, contact your company IT person.

First of all SEP 11.x is paper licensed. For transfering the client SEP to new system is that you can create the package from SEPM and deploy on that client.

How to create new client installation packages in the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager console

After that you can remove it from your dead system and remove that client entry from SEPM DB.
