Creating new install packages in SEPM

    Hello,

I'm a fairly new administrator of SEPM although I've been working with the 9.x administration console for quite a few years.

I have a question with regard to deploying clients remotely using the "Find unmanaged clients" tool within SEPM.

The default SEPM installatin includes three client installation packages - one for MAC systems, one for 32-bit and one for 64-bit Windows systems.  My question is: how do I create another client installation package so that it's a managed package?

The only way I've been able to remotely deploy a managed installation with the "Find unmanaged clients" tool is by exporting one of the default packages to a folder, overwriting the "sylink.xlm" file within and taking those files and overwriting the files that the default installations consist of under the following folder:

    %systemroot%\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Inetpub\ClientPackages

If I tried to create a new client install package using those files I've exported I get an error message saying "This package already exists".

I'm pretty confident in knowing this isn't exaclty the proper procedure for deploying managed clients via the "Find unmanaged clients" tool.  I've been able to create client install settings and client install feature sets just fine, however.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Chris

    Login to SEPM

    Admin tab

    Install Packages

You should see types of install packages now (Client Install package, Client Install Settings. Client Install Feature Sets)

Go to Client Install Settings - From here you can select the type of install - Silent, Unattended, Interactive. You can also make a few other changes to your liking.

    Click OK when done

Go to Client Install Feature Sets

You need to add a new feature set and the components you want the client to have.

    Click OK when done

    Go to Client Install packages

Select a package and click 'Export Client Install Package'

    Now customise to your liking

Click OK when done and the package will be exported.

    From here you can deploy

Once you Add/Create the Feature Sets, Install Settings.Make sure you name them which is easily recognizable.

Then you will be able to see those feature sets/Install Seetings from the Find Unmanaged Computers.

By Default it is greyed out however once you search the client and the search it over.

On the same screen you will Drop down boxes to select those settings/Feature sets.

You can also select which group the clients will report after installing.

If I go into the Find Unmanaged Computers utility and deploy using either the 32 or 64-bit installation package, the client installation ends up being unmanaged and never reports to the server.  This is regardless of my install settings or feature sets (neither of which allow you to specify a managed installation).

The only way I've gotten around this was by what I did in my first post.

Normal remote install should allow you to install managed client.

When you add the Client Install Setting Make sure you select "Remove Previous logs and settings and reset Client-Server Communication"

Are you sure the clients are unmanaged? Open SEP client window and go to Help and Support - Troubleshooting and see if there's a name for a managment server...

Hrmm, I will restore the original client installation files and try again, but I'm pretty sure with the original files intact and the reset client-server communication setting checked the clients were deployed as unmanaged.

    I will update...thanks guys!

Doesn't anyone here use the "find unmanaged computers" utility in the SEPM console to deploy managed installations?

Yes..It is a commonly used tool.

If your package is having issue try running Management Server Config. Wizard once ..

Once the Client is deployed does it show Self -Managed or Offline ?
