  • 1.  Possible to relocate virus def content on SEPM 12.1?

Is it possible to have the SEPM 12.1 server store virus definitions and other content on a data drive? I'd like to have this stuff on a different drive from the OS (C:) drive.

Yes, but for SEP 12.1. That KB assumes using IIS and I was hoping to move the location on a SEPM 12.1 server.

    Thanks!

    Hello J.Bonner,

    This is not possible.

The good news is that starting with SEP 12.1, the client will only keep the existing set of definitions and will delete old sets. SEP 11.x clients kept three to five versions of each type of content hanging around by default, although the exact number was configurable via the Registry. The new model should reduce disk space usage of the SEP client significantly.

I'm not concerned about the clients, only the SEPM servers. We have to store a lot of content in order to support 70,000+ clients. It would be nice to store the content on a SAN drive instead of the OS drive.

this is not possible at this moment, and the above link is applicable for SEP 11 as SEP 12 does not uses IIS.

Whoops. My mistake. Guess I needed to read closer (and drink more coffee.)

    Hello J.Bonner,

Two potential solutions I can think of for your questions.

    1. Install the SEPM on the Data Drive

If you install the SEPM to the data drive, the ..\SEPM\Inetpub\Content will be on the drive. This folder (and its subfolders) are where the SEPM keeps a local copy of the definitions. (It also keeps a copy in the database.) I assume this is the folder you are interested in moving.

    2. Mount a partition as a NTFS folder

You could have a partition (I assume this is possible in a SAN, but I'm not real savy on SANs) dedicated to holding the SEPM's definitions. You could mount this partition to Windows as the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Symatnec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Inetpub. As far as Windows is concerned, it's just another folder.

You would need to stop our SEPM service before touching this folder and copy all existing data into the new Inetpub folder before restarting the service.

The benefit of this solution is that you can still have the SEPM on the C: drive. The downside is it's definitly not supported (meaning we can't help you set this up.)

    Hope this helps.
