  • 1.  Rtvscan.exe at 99% CPU

    Posted Aug 28, 2008 09:00 AM

Hi. I'm running Symantec AntiVirus 10.1.6.6010 on a secondary AV server (OS Windows 2003 SPK1) and the RTVSCAN.EXE continues to rise to 99% over time, making the server slow and sluggish.  Rebooting the server resolves this issue but the problem comes back.  Seems to be a memory leak.

My Primary server is running the same OS and AV version as the secondary server.  The Primary server manages more than the secondary and the Primary is alittle less powerful than the secondary.  Problem only exists on the secondary server.

Other posts have indicated the same problem with 10.1.7 on clients.  Anyone else experiencing the same issue on a server?

    Thanks.

    EIG-AV

This is a flaw in ALL Symantec desktop antivirus products, and server desktop antivirus products, going back six, seven, or eight years, and including the most recent versions. Just do a Google search on rtvscan 100% cpu and you'll see what I mean. Add "2008" to that search, and you'll see lots of recent posts with newer versions.

NOTE: I have to put a caveat here: I haven't seen this on Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange - the server version that filters email only. It's the desktop client versions it happens on, including the "client" that runs on the server desktop.

The "solution" from Symantec (and previously Norton) was always to upgrade to a different version. That has never fixed the problem for me. I've seen it at different client sites on almost every version of Symantec antivirus desktop product, including the latest one.

The only solution is to use a different product. I'm very sorry this has happened to you, and I'm sorry that I can't be of more help. This is really infuriating - especially when you shell out for the newer product and it still happens. I've found it only happens on some machines too, and not others, even with the same version.

From what I've read on message boards, many users have had the same problem with different versions on different machines and the solution is always the same: Update to a newer version. Some users have reported that the problem went away after they updated their LiveUpdate, so I'm going to try that later on. If that doesn't work, I might update to 10.1.x.

Strange thing is, only one machine in our network (the primary antivirus server) has been experiencing the high CPU utilization and the others are normal.

Symantec's support has been abysmal so far though.

    Hi Jeremy

We are aware of this issue, but I would suggest calling in and making a case as well. Feel free to post your case number if you would like those techs in the forums to be able to look in on your case. Also as a side note we like to ask you not to post on such old topics. This is a very old thread and is most likely a different issue than you are seeing all together. If you are having trouble feel free to post a new thread but bringing up such old ones only adds to clutter and makes it harder for others to find the answers they need.

The latest software version for SAV is 10.1.8, I suggest you to upgrade to this version or go to Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP 11 MR4MP2)

I work in World No.1 IT company, and we use latest Symantec Version, and we do Virus def upgradation regularly on daily basis. But still most of the systems in floor were noticed system performance due to this rtvscan.exe, as it consumes most of the CPU utilization, even the increasing of the RAM is not resolving the issue i.e. if the RAM is upgraded from 512MB to 1GB, the CPU utilization is also indreasing in the same ratio.

I feel strange why the Symantec is not looking into this issue and providing the solution, if this case continues, the usage of SAV/NAV will definetly decreases.

Looking forward reply from the Symantec and other Tech guys.

    Appreciate your quick response.

    Rgds,
    Manne
