  • 1.  Server 2008 won't eject USB drive - related to Symantec?

    Hi folks,

I'm having a weird problem. I have Server 2008 Standard running as a MS Hyper -V host, with two virtual machines (SBS 2008 and Server 2008 Standard).  I have Symantec Endpoint Protection client installed on each server ( I have a Windows 2003 server acting as the Symantec Management console).  From the host server, I run a Windows Server Backup job that backs up the contents of the host and VM's to a external USB drive connected to the host.  The backup completes successfully, but when I go to eject the drive (to swap it out each day), I get the generic MS error message:

Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device
The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later.

There is some process holding the drive, and I can't eject it.  I'm trying to find out what it is.  If I simply unplug the drive (without getting it safely ejected) and plug in another drive, Windows sort of recognizes it, it shows up as a hard drive under device manager, but it doesn't show up in "My Computer", nor does it show up in disk management.  I'm essentially dead until I reboot the server, and then I can safely eject it easily, until the next backup job runs - at least that has been my scenario.

In researching what might be holding the drive open, others who have experienced similar things (mainly on Win 7 or Vista), have questioned whether it's the AV software.  I have several symanted services running on the server (Symantec Endpoint Protection, Symantec Event Manager, Symantec Management Client, and Symantec Settings Manager).

Is it possible the Symantec stuff is holding the drive from being ejected?  Just looking for ideas here, if anyone has any experience with this.

    Thanks,

    Mike

SEP does not automatically scan when a USB is plugged.

You could always kill the SEP service to see if that is it

    Brian,

OK, I will try that.  I didn't think it scanned, but glad you mentioned that.

    Thanks,
