STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):\System Root\System32\Config\SYSTEM or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Recently, we had 2 XP Pro SP3 computers go down with this blue screen within a couple of days of each other and two more at another unrelated location.  We've scanned the PCs with several other tools like MalwareBytes, MBR Check, etc and have not found any explanation for the BSOD.

We are able to boot into safe mode, run chkdsk /f and boot normally.  But after another reboot, the problem reappears.  We couldn't find a reason for this problem until we found this article:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itproxpsp/thread/2c485e55-2348-45d6-9102-6c2b00e57cf0

Bingo!  Every computer involved has SAV 9.x installed.  Sometime in the first week of September, an update or definition file has been delivered to the machine and rendered it useless.  We don't know why some PCs have not been affected but it is possible that they have been left running for several days and are just waiting to join the ranks of the dead!

Is there any way to know what downloaded from Symantec to cause this problem?  Right now we are following the instructions on that article to remove SAV as fast as we can and replace it with something else until a permanent solution can be worked out.

sav 9.x is EOL and is not supported, you may still try checking with Symantec.

As he said. The product has reached EOL and is no longer supported or updated via LiveUpdate. Quite frankly, it's not going to protect you from today's threats anyway. I would seriously suggest moving on to SEP 11.0.6100 (RU6MP1)

Yup, I agree too. Install SAV 10 or above...

My machines are on XP Pro SP3, using SAV10.

A couple of weeks ago I started getting profile issues, too (c0000218, etc).  Sometimes people would log into temp profiles without warning, and not be able to change any settings.  Video sometimes would be default VGA but trying to change it wouldn't do anything (users report "Big icons"). Sometimes they can't find their default printer or default email account in Outlook Express.

If I can login in normal mode, I schedule a CHKDSK /F and uninstall SAV10.  After reboot, login is immediately OK.  I then reinstall SAV10 and everything is fine.  So far disk error reports have been a mixed bag.  Chkdsk is either finding nothing or minor inconsistencies.  Even if you do chkdsk, and find no problem, you still have to uninstall SAV10 and reinstall.

Its primarily happening on desktops, a variety of Intel based boards D945s and D101s (about 75).  I have Toshiba tablets (about 40+ M7x0 series) and they have all been fine so far.

I have even had a few home users call asking what's going on.

I feel like this is a real problem.  I hope Symantec will check it out.
