Go into Control Panel/Add-Remove programs, then select the "Add/Remove Windows Components" button on the left hand side. Scroll down and check that IIS is selected. If not, select it, press Next and go through to the end - you may be asked for the install CD or install source. Once IIS is installed, try the SEPM installation again.

As per your PM, if you have IIS enabled already, then enable verbose logging for the SEPM install (assumed to be MSI based as it has roll back ) and zip the log for posting if you cannot decipher it yourself.

Is there something odd about your setup?  The profile paths in the log suggest that the user profile is "hotdesk1" but in one place in the log, the Username is reported as "shvtest".  (This may be a red herring, but worth asking just in case)

Do you have any java runtimes installed?

Is your installing account a local admin?

Have you copied the install files to a folder on your desktop?  If so, can I suggest trying the install from a CD source, or at least move the folder to the root of C: to reduce the path length.

On computers that run IIS 7.0 or later, the following IIS role services must also be installed: ASP.NET, CGI, and IIS 6.0 Management Compatibility.

The smaller of the logs suggests that the check for SEPM required services fails, but does not explicitly state which ones are missing.

That's all I can suggest, apart from the obvious step of reading the documentation and checking that any system pre-requisites are present on your test box.

well the hotdest1 is the user name and shvtest is the name of the PC.

nope i think no java runtimes is installed because i have just formated the PC and installed the new windows XP on it.

yes it is. it is the only account that i have created on it.

the folder is in on the desktop. no there is no CD with it.

about the IIS, IIS 7.0 and 6.0 i guess are not included in XP, correct me if i am wrong,  XP have and only can have IIS 5.1 right?

    >my company has downloaded the CD of it and so we don't have the CD.

If you have downloaded the CD image, why do you not have a CD?

I would recommend you write the files to a CD and try installing from there.

Make sure that the test machine has a working internet connection so that LiveUpdate is able to download any updated files.

Oddly enough, the machine name appears in the log as shv-test. I suspect this has nothing to do with the underlying problem.

As I mentioned earlier, you should try to burn the install files to CD, as there is an explicit check to see if the files are in the "root" of the volume, but I do not know whether this is a mandatory requirement. Having the source on the desktop makes the path to the "root" of the install folders quite long as it will be something like c:\documents and settings\<username>\Desktop\<foldername on desktop>\blah blah blah.

I cannot recall precisely which version of IIS comes as standard with XP - and whether it depends on the SP level of XP (I assume you are using SP3 ?). It's definitely not 7.0, but you didn't mention specifically what version you might have installed, so that's why I asked.

Apart from the suggestion to try installing from CD, I am out of ideas, as I do not know the product requirements. Have you checked the installation requirements in the documentation?

    Hi Blackvirus,

If at all possible, I really recommend finding a server OS for the SEPM.  If you absolutely must use XP, then please do read this thread (and its linked documents) carefully:

    Thanks and best regards,

    hi,

before installing the manager please try these steps:

    1. Delete the following folders (if they exist):
      C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate

      or c:\program data\symantec\liveupdate (Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008)
    2. Install LiveUpdate by running the following file from CD1:
      \SEP\LUSETUP.EXE
NOTE: LiveUpdate 3.3 is the only version supported with enterprise products.
    3. Install Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager

please post the new SEPM_INST.log if the installation fails again

That sounds strange, because LiveUpdate 3.4 is not designed for Enterprise products. LU 3.3 is for SEP:

    3.3.x -
Initial release of LU 3.3.x for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0

    3.4.x -
Initial release of LU 3.4.x for Norton Internet Security 2008

    3.4.1 -
Initial release of LU 3.4.1.x for Norton 360 version 2

Just an extra note: Microsoft has officiallu retired XP SP2.  http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-gb&C2=1173

To remain secure, I recommend that all XP systems be upgraded to SP3 and all the latest patches applied!

For a test, I installed the new SEP 12 public beta on an old windows XP laptop that does not have IIS.

    It installed successfully.

SEP 12 does not use IIS.  It does use Apache and Tomcat.
