This page is chock full of easy to follow, step-by-step instructions for installing and configuring Altiris Workflow Solution 6.0.

Prerequisites for Workflow Solution

The prerequisites for installing Workflow Solution are as follows
  • Notification Server 6.0 SP3 R5
  • Altiris Software Development Kit (ASDK) 1.4
  • CMDB 6.5 and Asset Management 6.5
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0
  • Microsoft IIS 5.x and higher for deployment of projects

Installing and Configuring Workflow Solution

The process for setting up Workflow Solution is outlined as follows
  1. Install Workflow Solution.
  2. Install Workflow Server.
  3. Install Workflow Designer.
  4. Create Altiris Notification Server credentials in Workflow Designer.
  5. Import Altiris components in Workflow Designer.
  6. Build the Altiris generators in Workflow Designer.

Installing Workflow Solution

Altiris Workflow Solution can be downloaded from http://www.altiris.com/Download.aspx.

Workflow Solution can be installed or upgraded from the Solution Center.

To install or upgrade Workflow Solution from the Solution Center

  1. From the Altiris Console, click the Configuration tab.
  2. In the left pane, select Configuration > Upgrade/Install Additional Solutions.
  3. In the Available Solutions tab, click Solutions.
  4. Click Altiris Workflow Solution and follow the on-screen instructions.

Installing Altiris Workflow Server

The Workflow Server is the execution environment for applications built using Workflow Designer. It publishes workflow projects to Workflow Solution. It is a standard Web server.

We recommend that you install the Workflow Server on a separate computer from Notification Server and Workflow Designer. You should have one Workflow Server installed for every Notification Server you have.

Workflow Solution provides a single installer executable for Workflow Server and Designer. In the install wizard, you are prompted to choose either the server or the designer and only the selected software is installed.

To install Workflow Server

  1. From the Notification Server computer running Workflow Solution, locate the Workflow Server and Designer executable at Install Path\Altiris\Workflow\agent\Altiris_Workflow_Server_Setup.exe.
  2. Distribute the Workflow Server and Designer executable to the computer where you want to install Workflow Server.
  3. Install Workflow Server to the wanted computer.

Installing Altiris Workflow Designer

Workflow Designer is used to design workflows. These workflows are then published by Workflow Server to Workflow Solution.

Workflow Designer is made to be installed on client computers. Workflow Designer does not need to be installed on an Altiris Agent computer; however, if it is, it can be distributed through Task Server or Deployment Server.

Workflow Solution provides a single installer executable for Workflow Server and Designer. In the install wizard, you are prompted to choose either the server or the designer and only the selected software is installed.

You can distribute this executable to as many client computers as you need.

To install Workflow Designer

  1. From the Notification Server computer running Workflow Solution, locate the Workflow Server and Designer executable at Install Path\Altiris\Workflow\agent\Altiris_Workflow_Server_Setup.exe.
  2. Distribute the Workflow Designer executable to the wanted client computers.
  3. Install Workflow Designer to the wanted client computers.

Creating Altiris Notification Server Credentials

Before you create workflows in Workflow Designer, you need to enter the credentials for the Notification Server that will run the processes. You can add credentials for as many Notification Servers as you want, but only one will be designated the default Notification Server.

Note: The default Notification Server settings added to the Altiris NS Credentials plug-in is for design time only. The credentials are used to pre-populate some editor pop-ups during design and for lookups to the Notification Server on component editors.

To create Altiris Notification Server redentials in Workflow Designer

  1. In Workflow Designer, select Plugins > Altiris NS Credentials.
  2. For each Notification Server you are working with on that Workflow Designer, do the
  3. following:
    • Click Add.
    • Enter the Name of the Notification Server.
    • Enter the User Name and Password for logging onto that Notification Server.
    • Click OK.

Importing Altiris Components

When Workflow Designer is installed, an Altiris branch appears in the component list. This branch contains some of the Altiris components. You can import more Altiris components as needed.

To import Altiris components

  1. In Workflow Designer, open a project.
  2. Click Import Components.
  3. Click the Custom Libraries tab.
  4. Select the Altiris libraries you want to import.
  5. Click Add, and then OK.
  6. The Altiris components show up under the Altiris branch and any branch with an orange star appearing in the Component Toolbox.

Building the Altiris Component Generators

There are four Altiris component generators. Each component generator is an Integration project, created through Workflow Designer, which builds or rebuilds available Altiris components. After these components are built, you can use them in your workflow.

Resource, ASDK, and Task component generators are singleton generators. There can only be one of each respective library. Whereas there can be any number of Report component generators created.

Rebuilding the Altiris component generators (chapter 4)

To build the Altiris generators

  1. In Workflow Designer, select New.
  2. Select the Integration project type.
  3. Type a name for your library and click OK.
  4. Select the Altiris Workflow generator you want to build and click OK.

There is a pop up for Resource, ASDK, and Task generators that indicate they are singleton generators. Only one project is allowed for these types of libraries and running these generators overwrites the existing project.
  5. If you chose the Altiris Report Component generator, select the configuration you want.
  6. Click Compile and Close.
  7. Repeat the above steps for each Altiris generator you want to build.
