Symantec User Migration Content IDE

May 11, 2009 12:53 PM

The Symantec User Migration (SUM) Content IDE application allows users to modify and create new product definitions for Symantec User Migration.  This can be installed as part of Ghost Solution Suite. Although not installed by default, during installation, when the installed application window appears, the user can select this application to be installed.

When Symantec User Migration is installed, the product definitions are stored in a zip package (scm_xml.zip) under "User Migration Wizard\xml." Symantec User Migration Wizard uses this package to determine how to detect applications and how to capture the application settings.

Scm_xml.zip contains the following SUM XML definition files:
• SCMMigrationOptions.xml: Contains the PID and descriptions of the products.
• SCMOSIncludes.xml: Contains a list of the Operating System compatibility for each product.
• SCMSnippets.xml: Displays information on how each product is detected from the registry.
• SCMCommands.xml: Information regarding how to capture the application settings
• SCMTransforms.xml: Information on how to transform one version of an application to the next.

When SUM Content IDE opens a scm_xml.zip package/project, the SUM XML definitions are read in and displayed for the user.

The product list on the left hand side corresponds to the SCMMigrationOptions.xml
The Properties tab corresponds to the product details in the SCMOSIncludes.xml
The Detection tab corresponds to the product details in the SCMSnippets.xml
The Commands tab corresponds to the product details in the SCMCommands.xml
The Conversion pane corresponds to the product details in the SCMTransforms.xml

Every command/setting listed in the Detection and Commands tab will contain a description on how the command/setting works.

Once the modifications are complete and saved, the package should be returned back to the "User Migration Wizard\xml" folder. The package has to be named scm_xml.zip for Symantec User Migration Wizard to detect it.

Note: When restoring the User Migration Package on a client machine, the new scm_xml.zip should be copied to the client machine as well.
