SEP 12.1 License Concept

Jan 27, 2012 10:04 AM

Updated on 1st Feb'15

SEP 11.x licensing is basically just a "paper" license product. However, with SEP 12.1 the licensing is a "software" license product and uses a  license file. It is important to become familiar with this license concept.

Depending upon the license vendor, you receive either a product license serial number or a Symantec License file. License files are either sent to you in email or downloaded from a secure Web site. The license file uses the file extension .SLF (Symantec license file ). When the license file is sent by email, it is attached to the email as a .ZIP file. You must extract the .SLF file from the .ZIP file.

Save the license file to a computer that can be accessed from the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager console. Many users save the license on the computer that hosts the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager and also save a copy of the license to a different computer or removable storage media for safekeeping.

Note:  In some cases, End user have a license serial number only . This serial number can be used to activate your Symantec product license and to download the product software.

A Symantec Endpoint Protection license applies to the Symantec Endpoint Protection clients. For instance, in a network with 50 endpoints, the license must provide for a minimum of 50 seats. Instances of the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager do not require a license.

Implementing licensing in Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 has several functions:

  • Dictating compliance
  • Determining product type
  • Obtaining a Client Authentication Token (CAT) from Symantec

Types of enforcement

When the license goes out of compliance the Symantec Endpoint Protection product goes into enforcement mode. There are two types of enforcement

1)  Hard Enforcement: Applies to SEP 12.1 Small Business Edition

2)  Soft Enforcement: Applies to SEP 12.1 Enterprise Edition

Types of licenses

Several types of licenses are used in Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1. The license types are:

  • Trial License
  • Upgrade License
  • Over Deployed License
  • Never Expiring License
  • Paid License

Licenses also use the concept of “Grace Values.”

Grace Period: Additional validity beyond expiration date.

Grace Seats: Additional seats beyond number of seats they have purchased

Trial License

A trial license allows the customer to evaluate the product.

Applicable to both Enterprise and Small Business Edition

Enterprise Edition is 60 days validity with no grace days

Small Business Edition is 30 days validity with 30 days grace.

Provides hard enforcement for both Enterprise and Small Business Edition versions

This is the only license that provides hard enforcement on Enterprise.

Unlimited node license.

Included in SEPM Server DVD layout, activated during server configuration on server machine.

Upgrade license

Allows the customer to use the product for a period when they migrate from any previous version of SEP to SEP 12.1 Enterprise.

Applicable to only Enterprise Edition.

Has 90 days of validity.

Is a soft enforcement license.

Unlimited node license.

Over deployed license

Applicable to both Small Business Edition and Enterprise Edition.

• In Small Business Edition, is given to clients deployed beyond entitled seats plus the grace count.

• In Enterprise Edition, is given to clients in case of error situations when no regular license exists.

• Included in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Server DVD layout. No activation required.

Never expiring license

Intent of this license is to provide licensing to unmanaged clients.

•  Applicable to both  Small Business Edition and Enterprise Edition.

•  Unmanaged clients always work with the never expiring license.

•  Has no expiration date.

Paid license

Paid licenses are created by the licensing portal for customers.

Imported into the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager through the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Console.

Can be sent as slf files or downloaded through IPL.

Virtual Machines

Under sections of the SEP 12.1 EULA 17.3 and 17.4, this construes two installations of SEP client and requires two licenses per piece of hardware configured in this manner.

Each running instance (physical and/or virtual) must be licensed.

The license file is located at C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\tomcat\etc\license\SEP_XX.slf.

New feature in SEP 12.1 for adding new licenses into Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager

Advocated as primary mode for license import

slf is files are secondary, as back up

Users enter license serial number into Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager.

Multiple serial numbers can be entered in one session

Each SN should have Company Info and Technical Contact Info associated with that SN

After the information is received by the licensing server the license is sent back

Double-byte Character Set (DBCS) characters are not supported in this input

License administration

License administration is done from Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Console > Admin> Licenses tab.

Administrators can

  • Activate a license
  • Import a license
  • Renew a license
  • Delete a license
  • Recover a license

Deleted licenses stay in system in ‘deleted’ mode for one year. This way licenses can be recovered from the local database when necessary.

The licenses needed to start the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager server are now part of the Recovery.zip file created at the end of the configuration or upgrade process

Backup license files like any other file.

Copy the .slf license files from the directory where the files were saved to another computer.

If you lose the license file, or it becomes irreparably damaged, you can download the file from the Symantec Licensing Portal Web site and use the file in the same manner as you used original license file.

Hi Seelan,

Sorry for the delayed reponse. let me know in case you still looking for assistance.

hi chetan savade

Please help me to solve my activation problem.

Aug 29, 2016 08:04 AM

hi

i have .slf file for a 25 user. if i import and activate the license its showing your licese is activated successfully, but i cant get imported file in my home page. please help me to solve this problem.

May 30, 2016 08:05 AM

@amk_rash

Just to add what Chetan Savade has said, from 9th May 2016 the 30 days additional days (grace period) will no longer be applicable.

In Symantec's terms there are two things "grace period" and "grace policy". Grace period is related to late renenwal ordering process. Simply meaning if you do not renew on time, you will be subject to late penalities which would obviously be higher than the renewal cost

Grace policy is responible for shutting off product updates. Grace policy is included in the .slf file. This however remains unchanged, meaning you should be able to get the product updates for 30 days post renewal date (please confirm with your Symantec partner).

As per rule if you procure new licenses today then your start date would begin from the day the licenses are made. I think you want that your renewal end date and the end date of new licenses should be the same.

The simplest way to do that would be to ask your Symantec partner to add additional licenses with your renewal and mention them that you want the same end date. But if you would be procuring later and still want the same end date, the Symantec partner could then work on the pricing with the Symantec disti on this.

Last bit, Symantec does consider exception but it is not for everyone. It is on a case to case basis and there should be some sound reasoning behind it. It would be better to have a discussion with your Symantec partner and Symantec Account Manager on this.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your query.

It's against compliance & may get highlighted in the audit program as well.

As per my knowledge we do not have any late renewal exception now in place however get in touch with Sales/partner to know the right answer.

Hi

I am using Symantec Endpoint Protection Version 12.1.6 with license for 750 seats, before 2 months I received over deployed license alert, as I know clients will continue update without any porblem, but is there any legal issues in that espically in my company we have a very small budget and purchasing new licenses will take a long time and how much grace seats we have here, also if we purchase new license will buy from old date, I mean previous two months will be included ?

thanx

Small business uses hard inforcement rule so after client deployment you will face following problems

1) SEPM will show overdeployment status.

2) Client will not be able to download definitions.

Apr 19, 2016 02:04 PM

You will be over-deployed and the client will not receive content updates.

Upgrade is free from RU6 to RU6 MP1a. You can refer this article to perform SEPM upgrade: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/upgrade-process-sep-121-ru1-mp1-sep-121-ru2

But on fileconnect you will get the latest version only, SEP 12.1 RU6 MP3 is the latest version. However you still need any legacy version support can provide you download link or create a web case & provide me the case number. I will make sure to send you 12.1 RU6 MP1a download link.

Actually SEPM doesn't show overdeployed clients IP address/hostname. Because it just keeps track of total seats vs used seats, over deployed seats

For e.g if any machine did not connect to the network for 30 days, SEPM will remove that client entry automatically from the console & will make 1 license free.

As an admin you just need to maintain total number of license seats.

Thanks for this article;

Actually, Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager is showing over deployment of clients, can i know who's client is in over deployement not the number.

Hi,

Would you mind letting me know what are the after effects of over deployment?

--> It's just warning if using Enterprise Edition, clients will receive updates. In case of SBE, SEPM can't download latest definitions.

I have an information on my SEPM which shows over deplyed cleints. Which clients will be effected and how?

-->  If it's Enterprise Edition, none of the client will be affected. In SBE clients can not receive latest updates from the SEPM

I know clients without license will not be updated with the download protection.

Is there an article on the same? How and what clients are effected with OIverdeployment?

--> I haven't seen yet, but need to check more on it.

I am sure my company needs some more time to purchese the additional licenses and would like to know the after effects of the same.

Aug 07, 2014 07:40 AM

Hi,

You need to purchase additional license to cover 200 users. Import them into the SEPM to reflect desired results into the SEPM.

Being an Enterprise edition SEPM will show over-deployed status but clients will receive updates.

Follow the compliance process by adding new license into the SEPM.

Download protection stops updating

May 06, 2014 01:11 PM

Thank you for the reply.

Is there ever a time where, if the license isn't renewed, Symantec just simply stops providing updates? What's to stop companies from just not renewing their license if the updates continue?

May 06, 2014 09:41 AM

Hi,

You will keep receiving definitions updates if it's Enterprise Edition though license is expired and grace period has finished.

When your current license is about to expire, the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) begins sending license expiration notifications to the Symantec Endpoint Protection administrator. Symantec highly recommends that you renew your license before it expires.

To follow the compliance process you should renew the licenses within specified time.

May 06, 2014 07:39 AM

We have an EE license and I am pushing to get it renewed, From what I've read, even after the grace period ends, we will still continue to receive definition updates. Is that correct? How long is the grace period typically for EE licensing? Will the definition updates ever stop if we don't renew our licenses?

Hi Chetan,

May I have a reference link regarding the grace period license policy or agreement from Symentec? Since, we have our vendor here would like us to buy all new fresh licenses for our client Symentec for just only over a grace period 60 days.

Appreciated your assistance.

Oct 22, 2013 08:27 AM

Yes, I believe you are correct.

You should be able to renew the license. However license team can confirm the same.

Oct 22, 2013 02:48 AM

Hi Chetan,

Our SYMC PPROTECTION SUITE ENTERPRISE EDITION 4.0 has just expired. I saw you mentioned earlier a grace period is 60days, yet we are out of a grace period thus can we just renew our license without buying a new fresh license?? As per your above mentioned you said some functions will be disable only when we renew or reactivate then it will enable back a whole functions, am I right?

Hi Chetan,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
