As outlined in the article majoris, or major article, a number of causes can lend to having duplicates exist in your environment. Some are easy to remediate others, not so much. Since working with Altiris, we've developed some very good merge scripts and identifiers of data to help you on your way. The nature of all the previous merge scripts and reports only took into account one attribute for a resource - serial number. I've shown previously where you may have in your environment 2 or more unique resources reporting the same serial number. In this instance, if you were to merge these computers, you would essentially loose a computer because they are in fact unique assets, they just have a slight identity issue with giving you the correct serial number. Well, one way to fix this is to compare serial number, which should be a unique value, with another identifiable & unique value for each computer... like MAC address. Using a combination of these 2 attributes, you can clearly identify if assets which happen to be reporting the same serial number are reporting the same MAC address. If they are, your odds that they are identical computers are pretty darn high, go play Powerball tonight if you're feeling lucky. Since they are the same assets you would more than likely want to merge the 2 to clean-up your NSs. The attachment will show/allow you:
