Cincinnati Endpoint Management User Group

Introduction – 8:36

Patrick Tyler – 8:45 – UNIX, Linux and MAC management

  • Unix Linux Mac is managed by the same team.  There was a gap with the Windows team and that is now closing.
  • Traditional MAC users were departmental in the past.  These trends changed with the iPhone and iPads when Execs started carrying the devices to the office.  The iPad 2 was released and prompted further entry into the business.   As spots of application groups started developing apps for the iPads, IT teams started to have to support those devices.  An upswing of 30% entry into corporations over the last year has been MAC platforms; as a result Symantec moved MAC into a tier one application development standard.
  • Patching MAC was also added as a result.  PcAnywhere was also added for remote control to MAC’s.  Software delivery, from a windows perspective, native MAC packages if they are moved to a windows file system it does not work.  Today, we have MAC package using a DMG standard.  This preserves all of the acls of the file system.  It works very well.  MAC can now also be used as a package server.
  • Software metering was also missing in MAC.  In 6.0, minimum of 5 GUI’s were used to deliver software for MAC’s.  The activity center increased the usability and flexibility of delivering software for MAC’s.  The caveat is license creep.  Metering is now down on the same UI for ITMs 7.1.  We now measure for compliance and also what is used compared to what is installed.  We can now see usage and license trending.  MAC metering will be coming with the Barcelona release at the end of Q4.
  • Linux imaging is fully supported by Ghost.  MAC’s use net book and not PXE for imaging.  The idea is to provide net boot and PXE functionality mid-year.
  • New release for DS will be released in SP2 for DS.   The net boot integration for MAC users is not in there yet.  PXE is now separated from task and package services.  A MAC server will no longer be needed for MAC imaging once net boot is available.
  • Detection rules are not all there for Linux, UNIX and MAC.  The Barcelona release will handle most of these detection rules.
  • Software Virtualization for MAC is being discussed, no ETA on when this will be available for MAC’s.  This will be available for Windows during the Barcelona release (site server streaming).
  • MAC support – Antivirus, SEP, DS 6.0, CMS 7.0, Backup exec remote agent for Macintosh, Enterprise Vault client (Entourage).
  • Suse, Redhat are supported platforms for Linux.
  • In 2006, there was a code theft for pcAnywhere, man in the middle vulnerability.  A few weeks ago a few set of patches was released to address this issue.  After that, another set was released.  It was found that the code was stolen and hacked by a third party location here in the U.S.  The caveat to the patch is if you are using the internet gateway server, don’t use it.  Use VPN ONLY!  The only other way is if someone were to do a sniff on the network or man in the middle attack.  The cryptography will be up to date soon for all pcAnywhere agents.
