Yes, the SMG will continue to relay messages, it is designed to "fail open" when the license expires so as not to impact customer's business.
Having said that, you have to understand that the email will not be properly filtered, so your users will be at risk.
After you receive a new licensing file (".slf") you can apply it with minimal interruption.
Warning: There are multiple sub-components that check the license status and emit error/warning messages when the license is **** or expired.
Depending on your local conditions (mail volume, etc.) this has the potential to eat up a lot of disk space.
Net: you should renew as soon as possible, in the meantime keep an eye on your disk usage.
