How To Install SEP Client on Windows 7

Jan 14, 2010 08:30 AM

Sometimes SEP client is unable to install itself on Windows7 operating systems.

The problem is connected with 2 issues.

1. EXE file extractor[FreeExtractor] is not working correctly.

Sometimes on Windows 7 setup.exe file cannot automatically extract into %TEMP% folder.
To resolve this issue You need to Extract setup.exe file application like Winrar and install SEP using setup.exe or *.msi file in extracted folder.

2. Live Update application cannot be installed.

To resolve this problem You need to perform first step from point 1. but in hear firstly You need to install Live Update using LUSETUP.exe file after install it using setup.exe or *.msi file.
Second solution is to install SEP as unmanaged client.

Hi Rey-IT

thank you very much for the help. If I understand well, the problem concerns only those configurations of the SEP Manager, for which the SEP
RU5 installation package was downloaded advance through the LiveUpdate. If I remove the RU5 installation package from the SEP Manager and install it again by taking it from the first cdrom of SEP RU5, you think the problem is resolved?

Symantec is currently investigating this issue and will update this document when a solution becomes available. This install error occurs because the LiveUpdate installer package did not update correctly when the client package was downloaded via LiveUpdate. Windows 7 and Windows 2008R2 require a newer version of LiveUpdate than was included prior to Symantec Endpoint Protection RU5.

Work around for issue:

  1. Open and log into Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
  2. Select Admin
  3. Select the 11.0.5002.0 package you wish to deploy (either WIN32BIT or WIN64BIT)
  4. Click on Export Client Install Package
  5. Enter the folder location for the client package
  6. Uncheck the box for create a single .EXE file for this package.
  7. Select Settings and Features desired and Policy settings and Mode and click on OK
  8. After the package has finished exporting open the Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_11.0.5002.333_RU5 CD 1\SEP directory and copy the LuCheck.exe and LUSETUP.EXE in to the folder where expanded package was exported overwriting the existing LuCheck.exe and LUSETUP.EXE.
  9. The package can then be deployed via the Migration and Deployment Wizard

This will need to be done for both the 32bit and 64bit clients.

Hi Sezam,

what can be linked the problems about installing the Live Update? From a customer, installing the SEP Client RU5 managed through a single EXE file, has some problems installing the Live Update both on Windows 7, both on Windows XP workstations. As a rule, simply install the Live Update separately and then install the SEP Client, resolve always the problem, but having to do massive installation on many workstations, it can not certainly be a viable solution. Have you suggestions? Thank you very much.
