FYI: MS09-060 patch for Outlook 2007 (KB972363) introduces new functionality

Oct 20, 2009 05:26 PM

FYI all...our testing so far with the Outlook 2007 patch this month (MS09-060) shows that it is introducing some of the improvements made in Office 2007 SP2 and several previously-released Outlook 2007 hotfixes (specifically KB969907).  Basically after installing and restarting Outlook or the machine, the first launch of Outlook will run a process which reindexes or otherwise optimizes your PSTs.  The message box is shown in the KB link to 969907.  Depending on the size/fragmentation of the PST, it can take a substantial amount of time (30+ minutes) for this to complete, and your users may wonder what is going on.

This patch has also broken an Outlook add-in we use (Cisco MeetingPlace), which we still don't have a working solution for.

Remember...test, test, test!

ZeNick:
Yes, this reindexing or PST optimization occurs for all clients, regardless of Enterprise Vault being installed.  More details can be read in MSKB 968009.

Hi All,

I was wondering if the behavior of Outlook, after applying KB972363 (reindexing or PST optimization), was just met when the Enterprise Vault client was installed?
Do Outlook clients without EV client installed have the same behavior?

Many thanks for your answers.

I tried another way, now I am testing the single patch in different Vm's, hope to see a different result and identify patch that produce this Bsod.

riva11,
No, not so far.  Maybe one of the patches is conflicting with VMTools??  Just a guess.

I agree, patch deployment must have a test phase before deploy patch on production.  Nice info about MS09-060...

Btw, I have a VM where is running Win XP with all patches deployed and sometime this VM crash with a beatuful BSOD. It started only all patches were approved. Any other experience about random BSOD with latest MS patch release ?
