What's new
==========
--This release (10.7.5) introduces support for the deployment of Symantec
Messaging Gateway on Linux KVM platforms.
*
--This release also introduces WebPulse integration for URL category
filtering. Administrators can now create content filtering policies
to detect and manage spam and other unwanted content based on the URLs
contained in mail headers and body content, leveraging Broadcom's
best-of-breed URL categorization service.
*
--10.7.5 also includes changes to the Modify Clickable URLs action
in Content Filtering policies. These changes allow users to modify
only the URLs that match certain criteria, such as Spam URLs,
Malicious URLs, or Unknown URLs.
*
This release also includes:
---------------------------
--The ability to undo URL modification for outbound messages using Content
Filtering.
--A change in inbound mail processing that causes SMG to reject messages
if the sender presents a client certificate that cannot be validated.
--A fix for network access issues for the S450 hardware platform.
--A large number of new file types for email content filtering policies.
--Support for VMware 7.0.
*
*
Update considerations
=====================
--You must be at Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.6.6 or higher in order to
update to this release (Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.7.5).
*
--If you are updating from 10.6.6, you should enable the new Malware
configuration options for better detection. It leverages static and
dynamic artificial intelligence and the relationship-based AI for
file and mobile detections.
*
--As a best practice, back up your existing data before you run the
software update. The software update process may take several hours
to complete. Do not reboot while the software update is in progress.
Data corruption is likely if you reboot before the process is complete.
If data corruption occurs you must re-install the factory image on
the appliance.
*
--You can update from the command line or the Control Center. From the
command line, the update stops if the environment does not support
the new software. If the update stops, a message appears along with
a URL where you can find details about the problem and its solution,
if a solution is possible.
*
--To check if your environment can support the new software without
running the full update process, type "update check" at the command line.
*
--From the Control Center, if your system doesn't meet the requirements
for update, you will see "Version not available for download/install"
along with a tooltip that provides details about the problem and the
solution, if there is a solution. If there are no problems, the status
displayed is "Available for download", and you can proceed with the
update.
*
--If you observe unexpected behavior during the software update process,
or if the process fails or appears to terminate before completion,
examine the Messaging Gateway log files to verify that the update
succeeded and to determine whether further action is required.
*
--PLEASE NOTE: After the upgrade to 10.7.5 completes, you might not
automatically return to the login screen. Instead, the system might
display a screen that offers the choices "Advanced" or "Go Back."
Reload the page in your browser to return to the login screen.
*
--If you are NOT using the policy sharing feature for email content
filtering introduced in Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.7.4, you may
skip this section. If you ARE using policy sharing, you must ensure
that all Control Center instances (both central and remote) are
updated to the same product version.
EXAMPLE
Assume the following current deployment:
Cluster 1 = CC1, which controls Scanner01C1 and Scanner02C1.
Cluster 2 = CC2, which controls Scanner01C2 and Scanner02C2.
Cluster 3 = CC3, which controls Scanner01C3 and Scanner02C3.
Further, assume that CC1 is the central Control Center and CC2 and CC3
are the remote Control Centers.
Given the above scenario, follow these steps:
1 Update CC3.
2 Update the Scanners attached to CC3 (Scanner01C3 and Scanner02C3).
3 Update CC2.
4 Update the Scanners attached to CC2 (Scanner01C2 and Scanner02C2).
5 Update CC1 (the central Control Center for the cluster).
6 Update the Scanners attached to CC1 (Scanner01C1 and Scanner02C1).
PLEASE NOTE: the above steps are only an example. You can update the
Scanners in a different order (e.g. CC3->CC2->CC1, or CC2->CC3->CC1),
as long as you update the Control Centers and the Scanners attached
to them to the same update version.

Important information for installing in virtual environments
------------------------------------------------------------
Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.7.5 supports VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V,
and Linux KVM.
*
To install on VMware
--There are two methods for installing on supported VMware platforms. You
can load the ISO file into a preconfigured virtual machine, or you can
load the OVF, which includes the virtual machine configuration.
*
--The ISO file can be used on VMware ESXi/vSphere 6.5/6.7/7.0
Refer to Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.7 Installation Guide for
instructions and requirements.
*
--The OVF can be used for VMware ESXi/vSphere 6.5/6.7/7.0
Refer to Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.7 Installation Guide for
instructions and requirements.
*
To install on Hyper-V:
--There is one method for installing on supported Hyper-V platforms.
You can load the ISO file into a pre-configured virtual machine.
*
--The ISO file can be used on Hyper-V Windows Server 2012 and Windows
Server 2016.
*
See the Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.7 Installation Guide for
instructions and requirements.
*
To install on KVM:
--You can deploy an instance of Symantec Messaging Gateway from
an ISO image on a computer running Linux KVM. For an example
installation of KVM on a system running the CentOS Linux distribution,
see the Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.7 Installation Guide.
*
*
Supported paths to version 10.7.5
---------------------------------
You can update to Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.7.5 by using any of the
following methods:
--Software update from version 10.6.6 or later (only in supported
environments)
--OSrestore from ISO on supported hardware or in supported virtual
environments
--VMware installation with OVF file
*
*
Software update planning
------------------------
--You cannot update a Control Center and multiple Scanners simultaneously
from the Control Center. Each appliance must be updated individually.
*
--You must update your Control Center before you update your Scanners.
If you update the Scanners first, the Control Center will not be able
to communicate with them until the Control Center is updated. If you
choose to update your Scanners first, you should use the command line
interface to update remote Scanners.
*
--It is crucial that the time gap between updating your Scanners and
updating your Control Center is kept as short as possible: the Control
Center cannot propagate configuration changes to Scanners that
are on different versions. Configurations in which the Control Center
and Scanners run different versions for an extended period are
unsupported.
*
--Changes have been introduced that potentially impact your existing
malware policies. Please refer to the update considerations in the
Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.7.5 Release Notes at:
https://techdocs.broadcom.com/us/en/symantec-security-software/email-security/messaging-gateway/10-7-5/Related-Documents.html*

Running software update
=======================
For instructions and best update practices, see the Symantec Messaging
Gateway 10.7.5 Release Notes at:
https://techdocs.broadcom.com/us/en/symantec-security-software/email-security/messaging-gateway/10-7-5/Related-Documents.html*
Using the command line interface to perform update tasks
--------------------------------------------------------
To update using the command line interface:
1 Log into an appliance using an SSH client or log in at the console.
You must use the credentials for the admin user to log in.
2 To list available updates, type the following command:
update list
3 To verify that your system has the correct hardware and software for
update, type the following command:
update check
4 To download the update, type the following command:
update download
5 To install the update, type the following command:
update install
*
For the 'update check' 'update download' and 'update install' commands,
you can specify a version number. If you do not specify a version,
then the latest available version is assumed. For example, if versions
10.6.6-5 and 10.7.1-2 are both available, and you specify "update install
--version 10.6.6-5", then the specified version is installed, even
though it is not the most recent. However, if you do not specify a version,
then 10.7.1-2 is installed.
*
The update progress is displayed when you update from the command line.
*
To monitor the software update progress when you update using the Control
Center:
1 Using an SSH client or the console, log into the appliance you are
updating. You must use administrator credentials when logging in.
2 Type "tail -f update.log"
*
Information about the progress of the software update appears. Do not
restart the appliance before the update completes. When the update is
complete, the appliance restarts automatically. You will see the
following message:
sms-appliance-release-<version> successfully installed.
Rebooting appliance...
The appliance reboots. If you have logged into the appliance using an SSH
client, the connection will be lost.
You may receive warnings. See the release notes for more information.
*
*
Validating a successful update
------------------------------
To verify that your appliance is running Symantec Messaging Gateway version
10.7.5, log into the command line interface on an appliance and type the
following command:
show --version
*
