    Hi,

I have installed a trial version of Symantec Scan Engine (Version: 5.2.11.131 ) compatible for Linux.

There were a couple of locations pointing to "C:\" in the /opt/SYMCScan/bin/configuration.xml file. I have changed them appropriately as mentioned in the attached file.

Then, after receiving an e-mail with a license file containing in ".slf" format, I've placed it at the location "/opt/Symantec/Licenses".

When I attempt to start the Scan Engine with the command "/etc/init.d/symcscan start"...there was the below error in the /var/log/messages file

    kernel: symcscan[7869]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 0000000000000000 rsp 00000000f678a24c error 14

Please note that there was no logfile created in the <logdir>.

Kindly suggest a solution in this regards.

    Best Regards

    Narry

For some reason, there is no password for the console in the password field.

What process did you go through to install Scan Engine and which brand of Linux did you install it on?

    Narry,

That does not sound right, which locations did you have to change?  Why dont you send us the install log for Scan Engine, its under /var/log.  File name "SYMCScan-install.log".  Also, even without the license file Scan Engine should have been able to start up fine and the GUI should have been accessible.

    Thanks,
    Ben

The install log is full of errors showing that we were unable to find the java binaries. You need to install java or set up your java home to correctly reflect where java is located.

Thanks Davis for providing the response.

Java is already installed in our system and the appropriate environment variables are setup as mentioned below.

The otput of "echo $PATH" is below...

    /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_24/bin:/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin

The otput of "echo $CLASSPATH" is below...

    .:/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_24

I uninstalled (rpm -e SYMCScan) and reinstalled the ScanEngine and observed that

    1. The installation log files still say "/bin/java: No such file or directory"

    2. /opt/SYMCScan/bin/symcscan.sh file "PATH" set again but to a different location. Besides that, the "JavaJRELib" value is blank

    3. /opt/SYMCScan/bin/configuration.xml file has references to Windows system (the attributes TempDir, InstallDir and logdir)

    4. /opt/SYMCScan/bin/definitions/AntiVirus/setup-iu.sh has reference to "Symantec.conf" file (SymSettings=/etc/Symantec.conf) but no such file is created on installing the Scan Engine.

Attached are the files from our machine.

Request you to guide me further.

Thanks a lot for going through my queries and appreciate your time.

    Best Regards

    Narsimha

What happens if you just type "java --version" at the prompt?

Is this the 32-bit or 64-bit version of java? We are a 32-bit application so we need a 32-bit java runtime environment. You need to install the jre package we provide in the Scan Engine install archive.

The configuration.xml file is parsed during the install. The installation script builds it during the installation. It keeps failing becuase we can't find a usable java.

Thanks Davis for providing the response.

Ours is a 64-bit machine. Hence, I installed the JDK by using the RPM files that were shipped along with the Scan Engine product. But still the same kind of issue.

We are on RedHat Linux-5.6-x86_64, which is a 64 bit OS. Please let us know if ScanEngine-5.2.11.131 is compatible on this version of OS.

Scan Engine is compatible with 64bit editions of Red Hat Linux 5.

What is the result from "java --version" at the command line?

    Thanks Ben, for the response.

The output of "java -version" on our server is...

    [root@stateportal02 bin]# java -version
    java version "1.5.0_22"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_22-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0_22-b03, mixed mode)

Also, it is made sure that this (1.5.0_22) JRE is referred, with the help of "alternatives" command.

     alternatives - - install  /usr/bin/java java  /usr/java/jre1.5.0_22/bin/java 1

    Hi Narry,

I was looking at the SYMCScan-install.log log file.  When you install Scan Engine, does it still ask you for hte location of java?  If so, when prompted have you tried giving it the path to /usr/java/jre1.5.0_22/bin/java?

    Thanks,
    Ben

    Dear Ben,

    Thanks for providing the response.

While installing the Scan-Engine, it did not ask for the location of Java.

However, I was just going through all the config files after installing the Scan Engine and then manually edited the file "/opt/SYMCScan/bin/symcscan.sh" and provided the value for "JavaJRELib" as "/usr/java/jre1.5.0_22/lib/i386".

    Best Regards

I recently dealt with a very similar issue. Sometimes you can use symbolic links to point our software to the correct Java version but it will, most often, go to the first version installed. In this case I would imagine that is your 64bit Java installation.

What I would recommend is to:

    1. Uninstall all versions of Java on the server. If you have a program that requires the 64bit version of Java be aware this will cause issues!

    2. Uninstall Scan Engine.

    3. Clear out any pointer or reference files involving Java.

    4. Remove any left over Java settings

    5. Reinstall Java 32bit only

    6. Reinstall Scan Engine

This worked for my customer that had the same issue with the same basic configuration.

Let us know how it goes!
