I ran into a situation on a HP Compaq 8710w, that I needed to create a backup of the machine after it was encrypted with PGP.  I found an article that said that Acronis could back it up and I restored the backup to a seperate hard drive to test if the backup was useable.  At first I could only get to the bootguard screen so I downloaded the PGP 10.0.2 recovery disk and I am able to enter my passphrase however after I hit any key to continue without decryption I get stuck on a black screeen with E2 and a blinking cursor.  Any ideas to get past this and booted into Windows?

Is the PGP 10.0.2 recovery disk the same version of PGP thats installed on the system?  They need to be the exact same versions.

    Hello,

10.0.2 was know for issues with whole disk encryption. I suggest to decrypt the drive and encrypt it with atleast 10.3

Restoring a backup of an encrypted drive is not supported as when then backup starts it writes the decrypted data.

Restoring Symantec System Recovery images of machines that have been protected by Symantec Drive Encryption (previously PGP Whole Disk Encryption)

For more encrypted backup solutions, have a look at the article :

The version that was installed was 9.10  I have download the recovery disk for that version and now I am booting to a E1 with blinking cursor.

Take the disk out and put it in another machine with that version of PGP on.  That should get you access to the drive to decrypt it.

Slave the disk to another PC with the same or higer version of PGP / SED and use the PGP recovery commands to fix the issue :
