Were using SEPM and were using the Outlook Protection on the clients. Every now and then I get the error (see attached) about the add in cannot be loaded and has been disabled by Outlook. Please contact the add in manufacturer for an update. If no update is available, please uninstall the add-in.

Since a few users were having this problem (not sure why) I decided just to delete the add in from their machines. I did this by reading on this form by deleting the extend.dat file in the users profile. That worked since the error has not appeared again.

The question now is - How do I reload the Outlook add in? Will the SEPM realize that it's missing and re-install it by its self? Or do I have to run a command to update content on the client computer? Or do I have to totally push out the client from the SEPM?

Lastly, is it even worth having the Outlook add-in since it seems to be causing problems in outlook? maybe our SPAM filter is good enough to negate the add in?

    What do you experts think?

    Thanks!

Hard to say without knowing what version of SEP and version of Office.  Here's a post a while back that helped me with Outlook:

Try one of these solutions for me:

In Outlook 2007 the Add-ins is located in the Trust Center:

Open the Tools menu in Outlook 2007 ---> Trust Center ---> Add-ins ---> in the "Manage" combo box at the bottom of the page select "Exchange Client Extensions" ---> Click on Go ---> Uncheck "Symantec AntiVirus 10.1" & "Symantec AntiVirus Outlook Protection" ---> Click OK & restart Outlook.

If that does not fix the problem, find and delete all copies of the "Extend.dat" file on the computer. A copy of this file exists for each local user account. Then, restart the computer.

Note: You cannot delete copies of the "Extend.dat" file for other user accounts unless you log on with an account that has local administrator rights.

To find and delete copies of Extend.dat

Close "Outlook" if the program is open.

Confirm that Windows is set to "show hidden and system folders."

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Search > For Files or Folders.

Under "Search for files or folders named," type the following text:

    extend.dat

Click Search Now. Wait for the search to finish.

Delete all copies of the "Extend.dat" file.

    Restart the computer.

The mail scanning doesn't need a plug-in for outlook.  It basically acts as a transparent local proxy, intercepting any messages for scanning before sending them on.

To find and delete copies of Extend.dat

    1. Exit Outlook if the program is open.
    2. Confirm that Windows is set to show hidden and system folders.
To show hidden and system folders, read How to make Windows show all files.
    3. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Search > For Files or Folders.
    4. Under "Search for files or folders named," type the following text:

      extend.dat

    5. Click Search Now.
Wait for the search to finish.
    6. Delete all copies of the Extend.dat file.
    7. Restart the computer.

If a Group Policy that hides system files is in effect, you may not find the Extend.dat file when you search or browse, even after you set Windows to show all files. If you do not find any copies of the Extend.dat file, use a command prompt to delete the file(s).

To find and delete copies of Extend.dat from a command prompt

    1. Exit Outlook if the program is open.
    2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
    3. In the Open box, type cmd and then click OK.
    4. At the command prompt type the following command and then press Enter:

      cd "C:\Documents and Settings\<local_user><local_user>\Local Settings\Application Data"</local_user>

where <local_user> <local_user>is the name of the current local user.</local_user>

    5. Type cd microsoft\outlook and then press Enter.

    6. Type del extend.dat and then press Enter.
    7. Delete the Extend.dat file for every user local account on the computer.
    8. Restart the computer.

    Hi,

If you want to include Antivirus Email Protection in single SEP client means, you can run a modify installation from Add/Remove Programs, where you'll have options to include and exclude the SEP features, there you can include Antivirus Email Protection and finish the installation.

For multiple computers you can create a new package from SEPM with Antivirus Email Protection and push it across the network.

Creating custom client installation packages in the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager console

Please let me know, if this helped you!

    Thanks and Regards,
