  • 1.  Symantec Enterprise AntiVirus - "Server" vs "Client"

    Good day all,
First let me start by saying, if I'm posting this in the wrong forum, my appologies; from what I've found, this is where I should post AntiVirus topics.  If it's not, if a mod needs to move it, so be it.  All I ask is that I know where it moves to so I know for future reference!  :)

I opened a support case yesterday with Symantec because we are trying to install AV on to a new 64-bit Windows 2003 Server we have.  The tech told me that all I need to do is do a 'push' from the command console and that it would detect the version of Windows (32-bit vs 64-bit) and install the proper software.
Well, we tried to "Server Rollout Tool", but it attempts to install the "Program Files (x86)" so it therefore is attempting to install as a 32-bit app (it actually errors-out, so there's no way it's installing, anyway).  I tried to push the "Client" version instead, and it looks like that might work, but this contradicts what my network administrator was told a few years ago; he called Symantec Support about 2-3 years ago and was told "If you're running a Windows Server you should run the Server AV software".  At my old job (which I had left back in September) we were told that the only difference between the "Server" AV software and the "Client" AV software is that the "Server" has the ability to manage clients and reporting functions - that was it.

So I replied to the support tech with these concerns, but I thought I'd post here to see if I can get any ideas from Symantec employees and other users - what's the best thing to install on "Non-Monitoring" servers?  Are there any "Best Practices" whitepapers or links or anything that would help us out?

I appreciate any help and insight anyone can provide!
    Thanks!

    Hi Paul,

I'm assuming you're running version 10.x? What Symantec told you most recently is correct. The Server install is only if you want the management capability and intend on having Clients report to it. Otherwise you would install the Client on the server. And FYI, the Server (management) install is not supported on 64-bit systems.

    Hope this helps.

    Yeah, it's version 10.1 (XP & 2003 here).

I've yet to hear back from the tech, but we should install the 'basic' clients on servers, eh?  I think that will be helpful going forward (less resource use on the servers' ends).
I had also read as to what all's supported on 64-bit systems.  With this version so far I'm of the understandind that it's only Symantec Event, Realtime Protection, and the AV Engine (as per this document).

    Thanks!

I came to this scenario as a solution to my dilemma a couple months back. But because I'm at SAVCE 9.0, I've still not solved it. I'll make a new thread to ask for help.
