  • 1.  Wildcards in URL domain lists? (allow and block)

    Posted Feb 09, 2018 08:49 AM

    Hi all,

When creating a URL List for use in Content Filtering Policy, say I want to allow bbc.co.uk and all sub domains (e.g. sport.bbc.co.uk, news.bbc.co.uk, weather.bbc.co.uk) what is the best practice for entering these entries?

    Would it be:

    Option A: *bbc.co.uk

    Option B: *.bbc.co.uk

    Option C: .bbc.co.uk

Option D: none of the above!

And is there any documentation that confirms this?

    Thanks!

    Sam

    Hi Sam,

I've heard from one of our resident experts that the answer is D. none of the above. The correct answer is bbc.co.uk.

    Best wishes,

    Rebecca

    Dear Sam,

WSS does not support wild card entry , i have tested the same and it was not working at all as of now.

    Hello,

The correct way would be to put just:

    bbc.co.uk

(without any dots and asterixes in the beginning).

Here is the official document on that matter:

    Hello Sam,

WSS objects works in a similar way to Simple objects in the ProxySG VPM.

When you add example.com it includes every sub-domain to the domain.

Lets use symantec.com as an example. If you add symantec.com to the blocked urls list then you won't be able to reach any webpage that is hosted on the domain. so if you want to reach support.symantec.com you'll have to add it to the allowed url list.

    Have a great day!
