Kay, go to the CA support online connection, sign on, select Documentation on the left.. enter IDMS and you should see IDMS 18.5 English..
Go to that and it has the HTML and PDF formats.

Save yourself some time and get the full bookshelf (CA IDMS 18.5 -US English) and don’t bother with the User Bookshelf (CA IDMS 18.5 User Bookshelf-US English).

The User Bookshelf is pretty much limited to messages and codes manuals and some user guides, I really don’t know why CA bother with it. I struggle to think who would find that useful - User guides are fine, but you still need the Reference manuals.

Been there done that.

I agree that, if possible, get hold of the full bookshelf.

But many IDMS applications communicate with other systems, some inside and some outside the mainframe environment, it is useful to have basic manuals, such as messages and codes, available to people that provide support for these other systems.

One example I can recall a few years ago:
During a pre-production test, an external system received an error code: 1211. We all know that this means, but the external system support team were not familiar with IDMS error codes. They were in a different time zone to the IDMS support team so had to wait until the following morning to find out what it meant. A major release of an application was delayed and “IDMS” was blamed. (In fact they had omitted to run a DELETE process prior to an ADD process and filled up a test database). They tried to search the CA site for the error code information but, at that time, it was not available. If they had obtained the error code manual they would have immediately realised, being intelligent people, that “minor code 11=insufficient space” meant that they were storing too much data. So a subset of the documentation has its positives.

I think that opening up the entire documentation set publicly would be ideal for a support role but, possibly, not good from a commercial stand-point.

Thanks to Ed’s instructions, I now have the manuals in PDF format.

Next question: How can I search the entire folder of PDF files? The R18.0 manuals had this deficiency also, but someone (Colin Colwell?) created a PDX file for this purpose. Will there be a PDX file for the R18.5 manuals also?

You are correct - that was me. What you're referring to is an Adobe PDX index file, and I did create one for the v18 PDF set.
We'll work on one tomorrow for the new r18.5 documentation set and get it posted to CA Support Online. It will be available for download by the end of the week at the latest, but should be sooner.

Kay and everyone,
The PDF index file is available from CA Support Online. From the Support Documentation page, use the bottom Quick search dialog - there are 3 search dialogs on this page, so be sure to use the third one at the bottom of the page.

1. Log in to CSO with your Site ID.
2. Access the Support Documentation page.
3. In the Quick Search field at the bottom of the screen, enter Document ID number B028221E and click Go.
4. Download the ZIP to a local drive and unzip the files.
5. Open the PDF folder and then open the PDF_Index.PDX file.
6. From the Acrobat search dialog, if it is not already selected, select the third item down In the index named PDF_Index.pdx.

If you don't keep the Document ID number handy, you can always find it by using the Find Other Product Documentation fields on the Support Documentation page. Those are the middle, or second, field down on that page. Drill down into CA IDMS/DB r18.5 and you'll find it.
