Anyone else notice that a BUFNO override to the //HISTORY1 or //HISTxx1 DD (for improved performance, reduced elapsed time, at the sacrifice of REGION) appears to be ignored by SMFD / SMFDLS ?  This type of tweak stands to help improve overall SMF DIRECTOR efficiency, sort of like having LBI support would with tape-directed output files (for both DUMP and EXTRACT).  For this concern, we have a fresh CA SUPPORT issue opened -- more info to follow, however as well on the performance topic.....

Please consider these specific 'performance related' enhancements, if you care to:

MICS/SMF DIRECTOR interface and SAS INFILE / BUFNO=5 limitation - specific to MICS clients.

21574144-1: LBI SUPPORT - longstanding technology improvement that hasn't made it to SMF DIRECTOR.

The most effective method to see these enhancements added to SMF DIRECTOR is to register/logon to CA COMMUNITIES and vote each one up (don't be shy, ask your co-workers to do so as well!!)

    Happy Holidays!!

Okay, so is there anyone even remotely concerned about SMF DIRECTOR DUMP performance?

After reviewing SMF type 15 (CLOSE event) data, it appears that a BUFNO override on a //HISTORY1 DD will only be applied "IF" there happens to also be a BLKSIZE= parameter coded.

Clearly the two are not related at all, and CA has composed a PTF (confirmed it worked and soon to be published) so that if a //HISTORYn DD or a //HISTxxn DD (where "xx" relates to a SUBSTREAM ID) is coded, then the elapsed time for an SMFD / SMFDLS DUMP (either to tape or DASD) will likely improve.

I realize that using these "model" DD statements for various types of HISTORY files is not that well-documented, nonetheless the functionality does exist and stands to help improve SMF DIRECTOR DUMP elapsed time, at the small increased cost of REGION.

On the topic of z/OS SMF LOGSTREAMs and SMF DIRECTOR "optimized" performance / support, please seriously consider taking a few minutes to review this companion enhancement request and take action to VOTE-UP the idea, which honestly should have been included with the initial support for SUBSTREAMs.

With this new "idea" method of promoting enhancements, CA intends to focus attention on those enhancements / ideas that are given VOTEs, that is possibly even regardless of what enhancements might seem to be no-brainers.....
